The political landscape in Nepal is heating up as the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) takes a strong stance on accountability following the recent GenZ movement.
Rastriya Swatantra Party Demands
In a central committee meeting held in Baneshwor, the party has made a significant decision, demanding that former Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli, former Home Minister Ramesh Lekhak, and former Information Minister Prithvi Subba Gurung be barred from all political activities.
This unprecedented demand will remain in effect until the official investigation report into the GenZ movement crackdown is released. The RSP’s leadership has stated that holding those in power accountable for their actions during the violence is a crucial step towards justice and good governance. The move reflects the party’s core ideology of transparency and its commitment to challenging the traditional political establishment.
Key Demands and Decisions from the RSP Meeting
The meeting resulted in several key decisions that signal the party’s proactive approach to political reform in Nepal:
Bar on Former Leaders: The most prominent decision is the call to suspend the political participation of former Prime Minister Oli, along with former ministers Lekhak and Gurung. The RSP argues that their leadership during the state’s crackdown on the GenZ protests necessitates this measure to ensure an impartial and thorough investigation.
Pressure on Public Official Asset Investigation: The RSP has reaffirmed its commitment to fighting corruption by deciding to pressure the government to investigate the assets of all public officials who have held high office since the restoration of democracy in 2046 BS (1990 AD). This demand aims to uncover illicit wealth and hold corrupt officials accountable, a long-standing public concern.
Internal Probe into GenZ Protests: In a move to demonstrate its own transparency, the RSP has formed a committee to probe the possible involvement of its own members in the GenZ protests. This action aims to address any potential misconduct within the party’s ranks and maintain its clean image.
First National Convention: The party announced that its extended central meeting will be held in mid-Kartik. This meeting will be a crucial step in preparing for the party’s first national convention, where it will likely deliberate on its future strategies, policies, and leadership.
The Significance of the RSP’s Stance
The RSP, which has gained popularity for its anti-corruption platform, is positioning itself as a key voice for change in Nepal. The GenZ movement, a series of youth-led protests against corruption and poor governance, has become a defining moment in recent Nepali history. By demanding accountability from former top officials, the RSP is aligning itself with the widespread public demand for justice and an end to impunity.
The call to investigate the assets of public officials dating back to 1990 is particularly significant. It targets a systemic issue of corruption that has plagued Nepali politics for decades, promising to shine a light on the financial dealings of a generation of leaders.
The upcoming extended central meeting and the first national convention will be pivotal for the party. It will not only shape the RSP’s internal structure but also determine its political direction as it continues to challenge established political forces and work towards its stated goals of good governance and a corruption-free Nepal.
