CMC Hospital Launches Robotic Surgery: Next-Gen Tech in Nepal
Robotic Surgery At CMC
14th November 2025, Kathmandu
Chitwan Medical College (CMC) in Bharatpur, Chitwan, has proudly announced the commencement of its Robotic Surgery service.
Robotic Surgery At CMC
This groundbreaking development marks a significant leap in Tech in Healthcare for Nepal. As the second institution in Nepal and the first outside the Kathmandu Valley to adopt this advanced technology, the launch positions CMC Hospital at the forefront of surgical innovation.
The hospital confirmed today, in a press conference, that it has successfully completed 14 surgical procedures using the Surgical Robot system since September.
This $32 million-rupee investment underscores the hospital’s commitment to providing world-class medical facilities and driving the technological modernization of health services in the country.
The Precision of Robotic Surgery
Robotic Surgery represents a paradigm shift from conventional procedures. Surgeons do not operate directly with their hands. Instead, they utilize a computer console to control specialized robotic arms.
The system translates the surgeon’s hand movements into precise, micro-movements of the surgical instruments inside the patient’s body.
The surgical team controls the speed and direction of these instruments via the computer interface. This mechanism allows for exceptional dexterity, high-definition 3D visualization, and enhanced magnification, enabling surgeons to perform complex procedures with unprecedented precision and stability.
Key Surgical Teams Lead the Initiative
The new service is spearheaded by a dedicated team of specialist surgeons. Dr. Pratik Man Singh Gurung, a Robotic and Neuro Surgeon, along with GI Surgeons Dr. Bishal Acharya and Dr. Rohit Kumar Mishra, is leading the operational deployment of the system.
Their expertise ensures the safe and effective integration of this advanced Surgical Robot into standard medical practice. The availability of highly trained specialists is crucial for the successful implementation of such high-tech solutions.
CMC Hospital actively invests in training its personnel to manage and utilize this cutting-edge equipment, reinforcing its status as a technological leader in healthcare.
Major Patient Benefits and Applications
The adoption of Robotic Surgery delivers substantial benefits directly to the patients. These advantages significantly improve post-operative care and recovery:
-
Reduced Pain and Blood Loss: Minimally invasive techniques require smaller incisions, resulting in less tissue trauma and blood loss.
-
Shorter Hospital Stay: Patients experience faster recovery times, which effectively shortens the required length of hospitalization.
-
Quicker Healing: The precision of the Surgical Robot minimizes damage to surrounding tissue, allowing patients to return to their normal activities sooner.
-
Lower Complication Risk: The magnified 3D view and enhanced control reduce the risk of surgical complications.
The hospital notes that the application of this technology is particularly beneficial for complex surgeries in Urology, Gynecology, Cardiothoracic, and various Cancer treatments. This expands the scope of advanced care available to patients outside the capital.
Promoting Tech in Healthcare Awareness
To further promote the understanding and application of Robotic Surgery, the hospital is organizing a major conference on Kartik 29 (November 15).
The event is expected to draw over 200 participants from across Nepal. Such conferences are essential for educating the wider medical community about the capabilities and clinical impact of new Tech in Healthcare.
This milestone by CMC Hospital highlights a growing trend in Nepal—the rapid adoption of advanced medical technology to serve a broader population.
The strategic launch of the service outside the Kathmandu Valley ensures that high-quality, specialized care is becoming more accessible. The success of the 14 completed procedures solidifies the system’s operational viability and opens a new chapter for surgical excellence in Nepal.
