This new electric vehicle (EV) charging station, strategically positioned along the Mustang–Jomsom–Korala Highway, represents a major milestone for electric mobility in the Himalayan country.

The inauguration was held by Mr. Lopsang Chomfel Bista, the respected Chairperson of Damodarkunda Rural Municipality. The initiative is a collaborative effort between SPG Automobiles and their partners, Omoda & Jaecoo, demonstrating a strong commitment to promoting eco-friendly travel and tourism in one of Nepal’s most unique and challenging landscapes.

This pioneering project aims to significantly improve the travel experience for electric vehicle owners and further advance the adoption of electric vehicles in Nepal.

Conquering High-Altitude Challenges

The newly installed charging station stands at a formidable altitude of over 3,500 meters above sea level, securing its position as the highest-altitude EV charging station established by Omoda & Jaecoo in Nepal.

The project’s realization required overcoming significant technical and logistical hurdles. As explained by Mr. Krishna Pokharel, General Manager – Service & After Sales at SPG Automobiles, the primary challenge stemmed from the lack of a 33 kV transmission line from the Nepal Electricity Authority in Tsarang.

To address this, a basic charging station was installed, tailored to meet the immediate needs of the growing number of EV users venturing into this stunning, high-altitude region.

The infrastructure has been designed to operate effectively despite the thin air and extreme weather conditions typical of the area.

Until now, the absence of any reliable charging infrastructure beyond Jomsom has been a major deterrent for EV owners. Many drivers were forced to leave their electric vehicles behind and continue their journey towards Upper Mustang or the Korala border by other means.

This new SPG Automobiles EV charging station Tsarang eliminates that inconvenience, effectively opening up the Upper Mustang region to a new era of environmentally conscious tourism.

The charging station provides a crucial lifeline for electric vehicles, allowing for longer, more seamless journeys into the heart of the Himalayas. This is a game-changer for the region, fostering greater connectivity and accessibility for tourists and locals alike.

A Milestone for Sustainable Development and Tourism

The establishment of this charging station goes far beyond a simple service provision; it is a significant milestone for sustainable development in Nepal.

The project is expected to create valuable local employment opportunities, providing a boost to the economy of Tsarang and the surrounding communities.

By facilitating the use of electric vehicles, the initiative actively supports environmental sustainability by reducing carbon emissions and minimizing the use of fossil fuels in a fragile mountain ecosystem.

The station is a symbol of progress, demonstrating how modern technology can be integrated with local efforts to protect and preserve natural heritage.

SPG Automobiles and Omoda & Jaecoo are pioneering sustainable mobility solutions throughout Nepal, bringing reliable EV infrastructure to even the most remote and high-altitude locations.

This project in Tsarang is a testament to their vision and commitment. The successful installation of this charging station is a model for future infrastructure projects in remote regions, showing that with determination and innovation, even the most difficult environments can be made accessible to green technology.

The station’s presence will not only encourage more people to switch to electric vehicles but will also inspire other companies and organizations to invest in similar sustainable infrastructure projects, creating a domino effect for a cleaner, greener Nepal.

The initiative has been met with widespread enthusiasm from the local community, as well as from environmental and tourism advocates who recognize its crucial role in protecting the pristine Himalayan environment.

It marks a bold step towards achieving Nepal’s national goals of promoting clean energy and becoming a more sustainable and responsible tourist destination.

The ripple effect of this single charging station could be immense, attracting more electric vehicles to the region, and fostering a greater appreciation for eco-friendly travel in a country renowned for its natural beauty. This project is a clear indicator that the future of transportation in Nepal is electric.
