S&T Information Management 2025: Practices & Experiences Conference Begins in Kathmandu

The international conference on “Science and Technology Information Management System: Practices and Experiences” officially began on May 7, 2025, in Kathmandu.

The three-day event is being jointly organized by the Non-Aligned Movement Science and Technology Centre (NAM S&T Centre) and the Nepal Academy of Science and Technology (NAST).

Inaugurated by the Education and Technology Minister

The conference was inaugurated by Hon. Raghuji Pant, Minister for Education, Science and Technology, and Pro-Chancellor of NAST. He expressed that in today’s digital age, it is crucial to share experiences to make the most of evolving information technology.

During his address, Minister Pant stressed the need for policy reforms to create an environment in Nepal where IT professionals can thrive. He acknowledged that although NAST has continued to work actively, it is now time to deliver real results that uplift the people’s lives and advance national technology.

He further added that the ministry is ready to support NAST’s innovative programs and ensure effective resource management for implementation.

Over 100 Experts from NAM Countries Participating

The international conference features 110 participants from various member states of the NAM S&T Centre. The attendees include professionals and researchers in information technology, data science, and science communication.

The event aims to explore how information systems in science and technology can be better managed, particularly in low-resource environments.

Seven Key Themes and 25 Research Papers

According to NAST Secretary Dr. Rabindra Prasad Dhakal, the event is part of an initiative to create a dedicated information management center within NAST. The goal is to structure Nepal’s science and technology information systems and develop strategic policies by leveraging international expertise.

The conference covers seven core topics, including:

Managing S&T Data in Low-Resource Environments

Current and Emerging Issues in S&T Information Management

Policies and Governance in S&T Data Management

Open Access and Equitable Data Sharing

Early Career Researchers in S&T Information Management

Enhancing Information Security in S&T Domains

There are five keynote speakers, one special invited speaker, 9 papers from NAM countries, 16 papers from Nepal, and 10 poster presentations scheduled.

NAST to Become a Regional Tech Hub

Prof. Dr. Dilip Subba, Vice-Chancellor of NAST, said that the institution places high priority on IT development. He revealed plans to develop NAST as a regional hub for science and technology information management in South Asia.

He noted that structured information systems can greatly assist in data-driven policy-making and technology innovation.

Strengthening Global Collaboration Through NAM

Dr. Amitava Bandopadhyay, Director General of the NAM S&T Centre, emphasized that collaboration among developing nations is vital for scientific growth. He said the Centre continues to promote science and technology through conferences and joint publications.

He affirmed that the current conference in Nepal reflects this commitment and added that the Centre is optimistic about increasing its collaboration with NAST in the future.

Technology, Economy, and National Growth

Presenting Nepal’s perspective, Prof. Dr. Shashidhar Ram Joshi focused on how technology and economic development are closely connected. He argued that Nepal must enhance the use of technology and develop science-based policies to ensure sustainable national progress.

His presentation drew positive engagement from the audience, with a focus on bridging the gap between research and implementation.

Roadmap for Future Information Management in S&T

This international conference is expected to draft a strategic roadmap for science and technology information management systems. The outcomes will help guide both national and regional policies in the coming years.

The closing ceremony of the conference will be conducted by Nepal’s Minister for Communication and Information Technology, marking the conclusion of this global knowledge-sharing platform.
