18th November 2025, Kathmandfu
On the occasion of National Tax Day, two of Nepal’s most influential figures, Min Bahadur Gurung, Chairman of the Bhatbhateni Super Market chain, and Kamlesh Kumar Agrawal, President of the Nepal Chamber of Commerce (NCC), delivered strong messages on nation-building, tax compliance, and the urgent need for economic stability in the aftermath of the recent political upheaval.

Min Bahadur Gurung: Maximizing National Revenue is My Goal
Min Bahadur Gurung, a renowned Nepalese entrepreneur whose Bhatbhateni retail chain is a major contributor to the national treasury, underscored the patriotic duty of paying taxes.
Gurung’s main message emphasized that the development of the country hinges directly on the funds collected from the business community.
Commitment to Revenue: “The thought of having low money go into my country’s revenue account never crosses my mind. My constant wish is to be able to deposit more and more money into the national revenue account. It is the money we collect that builds the nation.”
The Gen Z Warning: Gurung issued a pointed warning following the massive Gen Z protests (which occurred on Bhadra 23 and 24 / August 23 and 24).
He noted the rapid change achieved by the movement and called for immediate and serious action from the leadership. “The Gen Z youth overthrew the government in just two days. We must now proceed with seriousness. If we don’t, such movements could happen even more frequently.”
This statement highlights the pressure on Nepal’s economy and political class to address deep-seated issues that fueled the Gen Z movement.
Kamlesh Kumar Agrawal: Economic Expansion Drives Revenue Growth
Kamlesh Kumar Agrawal, representing the Nepal Chamber of Commerce, shifted the focus to policy, arguing that true revenue growth is a byproduct of a flourishing private sector.
Agrawal stressed that Tax Day should be viewed as a mutual commitment between the government and taxpayers, not just a celebratory event.
Complementary Goals: “The expansion of economic activity and revenue growth are both mutually complementary. The more we can expand economic activities, the more revenue will increase, making it easier for the government to achieve its set targets.”
Policy Prerequisites: To facilitate this growth, Agrawal called for key reforms:
Private Sector-Friendly Tax Policies
Creation of a Taxpayer-Friendly Environment
The consensus among the business leaders is clear: sustained national development requires both a commitment to tax compliance from entrepreneurs and supportive, growth-oriented tax policy from the government.
