New Satellite Hospital to Support Existing Facility in Thapathali

This new hospital will operate as a satellite to the Paropakar Maternity and Gynecology Hospital located in Thapathali. The project aims to improve maternal and women’s health services in the region. KfW has informed the Nepal Government, the Ministry of Health and Population, and Chandragiri Municipality about the design approval. Following this, the process to prepare a detailed design and invite bids for construction will begin soon.

High-Level Team Visits for Site Assessment and Coordination

A high-level team from KfW’s central office in Berlin visited the site on Wednesday. The team conducted a thorough inspection and held discussions with local officials. Chandragiri Municipality’s Mayor, Ghanashyam Giri, along with elected representatives, administrative officers, and technical staff, participated in the meeting.

Mayor Giri expressed his gratitude for the approval and pledged full cooperation for the project’s next phases. He assured the delegation that the municipality would continue facilitating all necessary support. The German team members raised several questions, which the mayor answered with detailed explanations. They confirmed the municipality’s commitment to providing seamless coordination for hospital construction.

Support and Participation from Local Leaders

Other officials present included Deputy Mayor Basanti Shrestha, Chief Administrative Officer Surendra Thapamagar, Ward Chairperson Krishna Prasad Khadgi, Social Development Committee Coordinator Ghanashyam Luintel, and ward representatives from Chandragiri-11 and Chandragiri-5. Their presence highlighted the local government’s strong involvement and support.

Financial Backing and Land Allocation

KfW will provide financial and technical assistance worth approximately NPR 1 billion for this project. The Council of Ministers approved 23 ropani (approximately 1.17 hectares) of land for hospital construction, allocated to the municipality.

The municipality, in coordination with the federal government and KfW, developed the detailed project report (DPR) for this hospital. Mayor Giri emphasized that the municipality is committed to providing all necessary support to complete the project on time.

Impact on Healthcare Services in Western Kathmandu

Once completed, the hospital will serve as a major healthcare hub for the southwestern parts of Kathmandu district. It will provide specialized services to residents of Thankot, Dahachok, Naikap, New Bhanjyang, Ward Bhanjyang, Balambu, Mahadevsthan, Tinthana, Satungal, Matatirtha, Machhegaun, and Naikap Old Bhanjyang.

The hospital is also expected to benefit people from neighboring districts such as Dhading, Makwanpur, and Nuwakot. This new healthcare facility will improve access to specialized maternity and gynecological care in the region.

Existing Services and Future Expansion

Currently, a 15-bed hospital operates in Thankot, which started on 28th Baishakh 2076 (May 2019). This facility already offers laboratory, emergency, and birthing center services. Recently, it has also provided free specialized cardiology, family planning, and healthcare services for senior citizens, the underprivileged, and people with disabilities.

The new hospital will expand these services by adding more beds and specialist care. This development will create a new dimension in health services for the local population.

Mayor’s Vision for Quality and Accessible Healthcare

Mayor Giri shared the municipality’s vision of providing quality, accessible health services to residents. He said the local government is dedicated to ensuring the hospital is equipped with skilled personnel, advanced equipment, and solid infrastructure.

The municipality promises to work closely with all stakeholders to deliver affordable and high-standard healthcare services to the community.

Next Steps: Detailed Design and Tendering

With the preliminary design approved, KfW will now focus on preparing the detailed design. This will involve a comprehensive site study and technical planning. Soon after, the municipality will open the tender process to select contractors for construction.

Mayor Giri urged all parties involved to accelerate the project’s progress. The hospital’s construction will begin as soon as the tender is finalized and contracts awarded.

Conclusion: A New Chapter in Maternal Health Services

The approval and forthcoming construction of this maternity and gynecology hospital mark an important milestone for Chandragiri Municipality. It promises to enhance healthcare infrastructure and services significantly. With strong local government support and international cooperation, the project will improve maternal and women’s health outcomes in the southwestern Kathmandu valley and surrounding districts.
