The decision comes as a precautionary measure amid the ongoing nationwide unrest that has been fueled by Gen-Z-led protests.
The closure of the airport, which initially began on Tuesday afternoon, has been extended to ensure the safety and security of all passengers and aviation personnel. This is in response to persistent security concerns and the volatile situation in the country.
Airline Responses and Passenger Information
Major domestic airline, Buddha Air, has confirmed the suspension of all its scheduled flights until further notice. The airline has stated that it will provide full refunds to passengers with tickets for flights that have been canceled.
This policy aims to minimize the inconvenience caused to travelers during this period of disruption.
In a statement, Buddha Air said, “In light of the current situation in the country, flights to various domestic destinations have also been suspended. We sincerely apologize for the inconvenience and assure passengers that they will be fully refunded if they are unable to travel.”
The Airline Operators Association of Nepal (AOAN) has also issued a statement, emphasizing its commitment to serving the public even during times of national crisis. Manoj Karki, President of the AOAN, stated that member airlines are ready to provide support as needed.
Addressing Rumors and Tragic Events
The AOAN also addressed and denied recent social media speculation that its helicopters were being used to transport politicians, ministers, or public officials. The association clarified that such rumors are baseless and misleading.
The statement also conveyed the association’s deep sorrow over the tragic events of September 8, which saw the loss of 19 young protestors. “We extend our heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families and wish the injured a speedy recovery,” the statement read.
As the situation remains fluid, the aviation sector is on high alert. Further announcements regarding the resumption of flight services will be made based on an assessment of the security environment across the country.
Travelers are advised to stay in close contact with their respective airlines for the most current information.
