TikTok, in partnership with the Ministry of Communication and Information Technology Nepal (MoCIT), hosted the Digital Safety Summit Nepal on December 3, 2024.

This event brought together government officials, educators, digital rights experts, child safety advocates, and industry leaders, to promote online safety and digital literacy.

The summit featured insightful discussions, including a panel on “Navigating Risks, Protecting Users: A Collaborative Approach to Digital Safety”, with panelists such as TikTok creator Subas Ghimire, MoCIT Spokesperson Gajendra Thakur, Digital Safety Expert Santosh Sigdel alongside other Panelists as well. Key safety initiatives were also addressed, emphasizing TikTok’s tools like Family Pairing and its commitment to protecting Nepali users.

Ferdous Mottakin, Head of Public Policy and Government Relations for TikTok in South Asia stated,At TikTok, we are committed to ensuring the online safety and well-being of our users, particularly children and youth. We believe that this summit marks an important step towards creating a safer online environment in Nepal. We’re dedicated to promoting digital literacy and online safety through our initiatives, and we look forward to continuing our collaboration with the Nepal government to achieve this goal.”

Commenting on the summit, Gajendra Thakur, Spokesperson at MoCIT, highlighted the government’s unwavering commitment to creating a safer online ecosystem. He remarked, “This summit marks a significant step in our mission to secure a safe and inclusive digital environment for Nepal’s youth. The government remains steadfast in its efforts to implement innovative measures that protect children online and promote a digitally responsible society.”

The keynote speech by Prithvi Subba Gurung, Minister of MoCIT, underscored the government’s commitment to enhancing digital safety. The summit concluded with discussions on expanding TikTok’s public policy program in Nepal, making the way for a stronger, safer digital ecosystem in Nepal.

With a renewed dedication to creating a safer digital future for Nepalese communities, the Digital Safety Summit Nepal came to an end. This event has created the foundation for meaningful partnerships, raising awareness, and promoting youths’ well-being online by uniting important stakeholders.
