Twitter has permanently shut down US President Donald Trump’s Twitter account (@realDonaldTrump).
Trump’s tweet has sparked violence in the United States, with Twitter shutting down his account forever.
“After a close review of recent Tweets from the @realDonaldTrump account and the context around them we have permanently suspended the account due to the risk of further incitement of violence,” said Twitter.
“In the context of horrific events this week, we made it clear on Wednesday that additional violations of the Twitter Rules would potentially result in this very course of action.”
Twitter’s decision followed two Trump tweets on Friday afternoon that would end up being his last one. The tweets violated the company’s policy against glorifying abuse.
Twitter said, and “these two Tweets must be read in the context of broader events in the country and the ways in which the President’s statements can be mobilized by different audiences, including to incite violence, as well as in the context of the pattern of behavior from this account in recent weeks.”
Contrary to the democratic tradition of formally congratulating the outgoing president by attending the inauguration of the new president, Trump said on Friday that he would not attend the event. This is seen as another undemocratic move by Trump.
Vice President Michael R Pence is not sure if he will attend the swearing-in ceremony. He has stated that he is willing to go to the ceremony.
The swearing-in of President Biden is expected to take place amid tight security following Wednesday’s attack on parliament by Trump supporters.
Twitter’s policy would also prohibit Trump from directing the third party to operate a Twitter account on his behalf.
Trump attempted to test Twitter’s ban evasion strategy at approximately 8:30 p.m. ET Friday night when he or someone working on his behalf released four tweets from the @POTUS account.
“As I have been saying for a long time, Twitter has gone further and further in banning free speech, and tonight, Twitter employees have coordinated with the Democrats and the Radical Left in removing my account from their platform, to silence me,” Trump tweeted.
The tweets disappeared almost instantly.
Twitter also told CNN that Trump’s campaign account has also been permanently blocked. Until @TeamTrump was suspended, it was seen posting the same four-tweet thread that Trump had tried to share from the @POTUS account.
