United Cements Nepal CSR

As part of its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR), the company partnered with the local ward office to provide free basic and advanced tailoring training to 42 women. The three-month basic and two-month advanced sessions aimed to boost women’s skills and help them earn a sustainable income.

Promoting Economic Self-Reliance

The program focused on economic empowerment through practical skill development. By learning tailoring and cutting, women gained the tools to become self-reliant. Many participants expressed interest in starting small businesses or working in garment-related jobs. The training opened up opportunities for them to contribute financially to their households and communities.

Opening Address Emphasizes Commitment

At the opening of the training program, Mr. Hari Kumar Upreti, General Manager of United Cements Limited, shared the company’s vision. “We always place equal importance on social responsibility and business growth,” he said. According to him, the training would help build confidence in women and encourage them to seek new income sources. He emphasized that CSR should focus on creating long-term, positive change.

Support From Local Authorities

Ward Chairperson Mr. Madhav Prasad Silwal played an active role in the training initiative. During the closing ceremony, which he chaired, he thanked United Cements Limited for their support. “This program will help raise the living standards of these women,” he said. He also praised the company for targeting women and addressing their economic needs through practical training.

Training Timeline and Venue

The training started on 16 Mangsir 2081 (December 1, 2024) and concluded on 22 Baisakh 2082 (May 5, 2025). The closing ceremony was held on 7 Jestha 2082 (May 21, 2025) at the Dhunibeshi Municipality meeting hall. Mayor Mr. Balkrishna Acharya was present as the chief guest.

Skilled Faculty and Practical Sessions

Expert instructors led the sessions. The curriculum covered both basic and advanced tailoring techniques, including stitching, cutting, and pattern design. Throughout the program, the women received hands-on experience and guidance. Trainers also offered insights into setting up small tailoring businesses and finding employment.

Impact on Participants

Many women reported significant improvements in their skills and confidence. Some plan to open tailoring shops, while others aim to offer home-based services. The program helped them see the potential of using their new skills as a path to economic freedom. One participant shared, “I didn’t know how to sew before, but now I can stitch clothes and even take small orders from my neighbors.”

Mayor Applauds the Initiative

During his remarks at the closing ceremony, Mayor Acharya appreciated the company’s efforts. He called the training a timely and necessary step. “This is how we bring lasting change—by investing in people,” he said. He urged other private companies to follow United Cements’ example and support similar initiatives.

Sustained Commitment to CSR

United Cements Limited has remained active in community development. The company regularly contributes to education, healthcare, and social welfare. This training program reaffirmed its dedication to inclusive growth and sustainable impact. Company officials confirmed that more CSR initiatives are in the pipeline.

Call for More Collaboration

Leaders at the ceremony stressed the importance of partnerships between businesses and local governments. Programs like this show what can be achieved when the private and public sectors work together. “When we collaborate, we create stronger, more resilient communities,” said Chairperson Silwal.

A Model for Others

The success of this program highlights the need for targeted vocational training. In areas like Dhunibeshi, where employment options for women are limited, such training can be transformative. United Cements hopes that other businesses will replicate similar models to uplift underprivileged groups across Nepal.

Conclusion

United Cements Limited’s tailoring training in Dhunibeshi has made a lasting impact. By offering local women practical skills, the company helped build a foundation for economic self-sufficiency. The initiative reflects a responsible and people-focused business model, one that prioritizes community progress alongside corporate goals.

As Nepal looks to strengthen local economies and empower marginalized communities, programs like this provide a clear path forward. Through skill-based education and meaningful collaboration, real change is not only possible but also sustainable.
