A recent workshop organized by the Nepal Bankers’ Association (NBA) in collaboration with USAID Urja Nepal and the Solar Power Producers’ Association, Nepal (SOPPAN) shed light on the promising future of solar power in Nepal.
Workshop Highlights Nepal’s Solar
The event, titled “Mapping Solar Power Project Financing Opportunities and Trends in Nepal,” brought together key stakeholders to explore financing strategies and accelerate solar energy development.
Nepal’s Solar Energy Potential
Nepal’s favorable geographical location and increasing energy demands make it an ideal candidate for solar power adoption. The workshop emphasized the country’s significant potential to harness solar energy and reduce its reliance on imported fossil fuels. Mr. Ashok Sherchan, NBA Executive Committee Member and CEO of Prabhu Bank Limited, highlighted the government’s commitment to clean energy, noting that commercial banks invested over 370 billion in the energy sector during the fiscal year 2080/81.

The workshop explored innovative financing models, environmental and social impact standards, and strategic solar project development. Participants, including government representatives, banks, financial institutions, and development partners, discussed the need for regulatory clarity and public-private partnerships to support solar energy expansion.
One of the key challenges identified was the high upfront costs associated with solar projects. Experts emphasized the importance of concessional loans, international grants, and blended financing models to make solar projects more accessible to investors.

The workshop also underscored the importance of conducting thorough environmental and social impact assessments (ESIAs) to ensure that solar energy projects are sustainable and beneficial to local communities. These assessments are crucial for safeguarding communities from potential risks and promoting responsible development.
