On the occasion of World Diabetes Day, Grande International Hospital Dhapasi, a leading health institution in Nepal, organized various programs to mark the event. Highlighting the increasing risk of diabetes.
World Diabetes Day 2025
The hospital conducted a consciousness-raising walkathon and offered free health screening services. To effectively manage and prevent this disease, leveraging Digital Health (DH) technology is becoming increasingly essential. Diabetes remains a major global health challenge.
Grande’s Commitment to Awareness and Service
World Diabetes Day has been observed annually on November 14 (Kartik 28, 2082, in the Nepali calendar) since 2007, following a call from the United Nations. The day aims to spread awareness about diabetes risk, prevention, and treatment.
This morning, Grande Hospital organized a walkathon featuring informational leaflets and pamphlets. The walkathon started from the hospital and proceeded through Bhatbhateni, Greenland Chowk, Dhapasi Height, and Krishna Mandir before returning to the hospital premises.
Additionally, a free health screening camp was held on the hospital grounds. Over 100 individuals utilized the facilities, which included checks for sugar and blood pressure, along with dietician consultation services. Initiatives like these play a critical role in raising health awareness within the community.
Addressing Diabetes and Unhealthy Lifestyles
Dr. Sandesh Panthi, a Diabetes Specialist at Grande Hospital, pointed out that the main causes of diabetes include obesity, an unhealthy lifestyle, and a lack of physical activity.
He emphasized that the primary ways to prevent the disease are through a healthy diet, regular exercise, and avoiding smoking and excessive alcohol consumption.
Effective diabetes control requires not only individual efforts but also national health policies and creating an environment conducive to healthy living. Diabetes is increasingly becoming an epidemic in Nepal. Immediate steps must be taken to enhance the capacity of our health system for its prevention and management.
The Role of Digital Health in Diabetes Management
In developing countries like Nepal, Digital Health technologies can be crucial allies in the effective management of diabetes. As we observe World Diabetes Day, the role of technology cannot be overstated.
-
Telemedicine: Patients in remote areas can consult with specialist doctors from home. This significantly increases access to healthcare services.
-
Mobile Applications: Apps designed for diabetes management help patients actively track glucose levels, manage insulin dosages, and adhere to healthy diet plans.
-
Wearable Devices: Smartwatches and other wearables monitor a patient’s physical activity and heart rate, providing vital data for diabetes control.
-
Health Information Systems: Hospitals can use DH systems to maintain comprehensive digital records of patients. This makes the treatment process faster and more efficient.
-
Artificial Intelligence (AI): AI can assist in identifying individuals at high risk of developing diabetes and predicting treatment outcomes, enabling proactive intervention.
This year’s World Diabetes Day reinforces the urgent need for a digital transformation in Nepal’s healthcare sector.
Prioritizing the Future
To curb the rising challenge of diabetes, every nation must prioritize long-term health policies, public awareness, and the creation of lifestyle-friendly environments.
Only through the maximum utilization of technology will Nepal be able to effectively tackle chronic diseases such as diabetes. Integrating Digital Health initiatives into national health policies is the current imperative.
