16-Year-Old Rahul’s Dream Debut: Takes Wicket on First Ball in NPL
28th October 2026, Kathmandu
The Nepal Premier League (NPL) continues to capture international attention as its third edition gains momentum following official recognition from the International Cricket Council (ICC) and List A and T20 status. While global stars and massive crowd engagement drive the tournament’s popularity, a 16-year-old prodigy from Rautahat has emerged as the latest headline-maker.
Rahul Yadav, a teenager from Chandranigahpur, made a spectacular debut for the Janakpur Bolts, announcing his arrival on the grand stage by taking a wicket on his very first ball in the NPL.
From Talent Hunt to the Playing XI
Rahul’s path to the NPL was paved through a local talent hunt, where Janakpur Bolts selected him as their designated Iconic Player. While regulations mandate every franchise to include local talent in their squads, few iconic players secure a spot in the starting XI.
Janakpur, looking to revamp their approach after a tough previous season, placed their trust in the 16-year-old by naming him in the lineup for their opening game against Karnali Yaks.
A Dream Start in the Powerplay
Winning the toss, Janakpur Bolts captain Harmeet Singh elected to field first and entrusted the young bowler with the ball during the high-pressure powerplay phase.
Rahul stepped up in the third over, right after Karnali batter Dipak Dumre had launched an aggressive assault with two consecutive sixes in the preceding over. Rahul’s response was immediate and decisive:
First Ball: Dismissed the in-form Dipak Dumre on his first delivery, sparking wild celebrations across the stadium.
Follow-Up: Bowled three consecutive dot balls and restricted Karnali to just 1 run off the over.
Powerplay Return: Brought back for the final over of the powerplay, he built pressure with two dot balls before dismissing experienced Pakistani all-rounder Hussain Talat, caught by Anil Kumar Sah.
By the end of the powerplay, Rahul had delivered two overs, giving away just 2 runs while taking 2 vital wickets. He finished his four-over spell with figures of 2/15, earning the “Energetic Moment of the Match” award alongside a NPR 25,000 cash prize.
Praise from Captain and Local Community
Despite Janakpur Bolts falling short by 19 runs in the match, Rahul’s individual brilliance won praise from players and fans alike.
“Rahul played exceptionally well. He showcased his capability right in his first match and possesses great skill. He has the potential to become a major future star for Nepali cricket.” Harmeet Singh, Captain, Janakpur Bolts
Back in his hometown of Chandranigahpur and Betauna, local communities celebrated the youngster’s achievement. Local sports journalist Dipu Mishra noted that Rahul began his cricket journey on the modest Betauna grounds and has already brought pride to the district.
With his initial goal of an NPL debut accomplished, Rahul now sets his sights on earning a call-up to the Nepal national cricket team.
