Bandipur Sees Surge in Tourist Arrivals, Hotels Fully Booked and Business Owners Optimistic
25th November 2025, Kathmandu
The historic hill town of Bandipur is experiencing a significant boom in its tourism sector, recording a sharp and sustained rise in both international and domestic visitor arrivals over the past seven months.
Surge in Tourist Arrivals
This surge has brought a palpable sense of excitement and renewed confidence among local tourism entrepreneurs and business owners, with hotels and homestays reportedly operating at full capacity.
International Tourist Arrivals and Key Demographics
Data compiled by the temporary Tourist Police Post in Bandipur reveals robust growth in foreign visitation from Baisakh to Kartik of the current fiscal year (FY 2082/83), demonstrating a strong recovery and expansion compared to previous periods.
Total Foreign Visitors: Over the seven-month period, Bandipur recorded a total of 21,725 foreign tourists. This volume already surpasses the total foreign arrivals for the entire previous fiscal year, which saw 12,939 foreign tourists recorded between Chaitra 2081 and Chaitra 2082, signifying remarkable year-on-year growth.
Top Origin Country (China): Assistant Sub-Inspector Govinda Rana confirmed that the highest number of international visitors originated from China, accounting for 5,051 visitors during the reported period. This dominant share highlights the efficacy of tourism promotion efforts targeting the Chinese market.
Other Major Markets: Following the Chinese visitors, the other leading sources of international tourists include Vietnam, India, and Spain. This diversification is crucial for the stability of the local tourism economy.
Visitation Trend: Foreign tourist arrivals have shown a clear seasonal pattern, with lower numbers during the monsoon months (Asar, Shrawan, Bhadra) and a sharp rise during the peak trekking and sightseeing season of Ashoj (3,786 visitors) and Kartik (4,627 visitors). The peak month of Kartik alone saw almost a quarter of the total seven-month arrivals, reflecting the town’s popularity during the festive and clear weather seasons.
Domestic Tourism Surge and Economic Impact
Crucially, the rise in tourism is not solely dependent on international visitors; domestic tourism has played an even more significant role in driving the current boom, especially towards the latter half of the reporting period.
Total Domestic Visitors: An impressive 32,760 Nepali tourists visited Bandipur during the same seven-month period, significantly outnumbering the foreign arrivals.
Key Domestic Drivers: The surge in domestic tourism has been strongly influenced by college and school excursions, which have specifically boosted visitor numbers, particularly in the months of Kartik and Mangsir. This educational tourism segment is vital for consistent, off-peak revenue generation.
Peak Domestic Month: The month of Kartik saw an extraordinary leap in domestic arrivals, recording 17,058 visitors, accounting for more than half of the total seven-month domestic footfall. This massive influx indicates the town’s popularity as a preferred short-break or cultural excursion destination during the major holiday and festival season.
Economic Boost: Bandipur Rural Municipality Chair Surendra Bahadur Thapa confirmed the positive economic impact, stating that all four homestays and approximately 70 hotels in Bandipur are currently operating at full capacity. Business owners are highly encouraged by the steady and rising tourist flow, which translates to increased revenue and job security.
Future Outlook and Strategic Planning
Known affectionately as the “Queen of the Hills,” Bandipur is capitalizing on its growing popularity with targeted future planning and promotional campaigns.
Visitation Patterns: While the influx of Chinese tourists is high, the Tourist Police report noted that most Chinese visitors treat Bandipur as a sightseeing stop and often choose to stay overnight in nearby Pokhara or Chitwan. This identifies a key opportunity for local entrepreneurs to develop more attractive overnight packages to capture a greater share of the expenditure from this high-volume market.
Future Promotion: The local government is aggressively planning to attract even larger numbers of tourists during the upcoming “Visit Bandipur Year 2025”. This campaign will likely focus on enhancing local infrastructure, developing new tourism products, and securing long-term accommodation bookings, ensuring the town’s capacity can meet the anticipated demand from both international and domestic markets.
The combination of strong year-on-year growth in international arrivals and a massive surge in domestic tourism positions Bandipur as one of Nepal’s fastest-growing and most resilient tourism destinations, capable of sustaining high occupancy rates and encouraging further investment in tourism infrastructure.
