Nepal Valentine’s Day 2026: 450,000 Roses Demanded, 70% Imported
6th February 2026, Kathmandu
As Valentine’s Week begins tomorrow, Nepal’s floriculture market is bracing for a massive surge in demand. According to the Floriculture Association Nepal (FAN), the country is expected to consume approximately 450,000 stem roses between February 7 and February 14.

Heavy Reliance on India Due to Cold Weather
Despite a growing interest in domestic floriculture, Nepal continues to face production challenges during the winter months. Cold weather across the country has significantly slowed down local rose production, leaving domestic farms capable of meeting only 30% of the total market demand.
To bridge the gap, Nepal will import roughly 315,000 stems (70%) primarily from India, specifically from major hubs like Delhi and Kolkata. “While domestic production is sufficient during warmer months, the February chill makes high-tech greenhouses a necessity, which are still limited in Nepal,” stated FAN representatives.
Economic Impact and Price Surge
The total rose business during this romantic week is projected to reach an estimated Rs 56.2 million. However, a significant portion of this revenue will flow out of the country to pay for Indian imports.
Consumers should also prepare for a lighter wallet this year. The retail price for a single rose is expected to range between Rs 100 and Rs 150, a notable increase from last year’s prices of Rs 90 to Rs 120. This price hike is attributed to:
-
Rising auction prices in the Indian market.
-
Increased costs for high-quality packaging and logistics.
-
Stricter government phytosanitary criteria for formal imports.
Market Distribution
The Kathmandu Valley remains the primary consumer hub, expected to account for 60% of total sales (approx. 270,000 stems). The remaining 40% (180,000 stems) will be distributed across major cities like Pokhara, Chitwan, and Butwal.
