Nepal Launches Online Customs Permit for Foreign Tourist Vehicles: Pay Revenue and Extend Permits Remotely

In a significant move to boost tourism and streamline border processes, the Government of Nepal has officially launched an online service for foreign tourist vehicles entering the country via land routes.

This initiative is primarily aimed at facilitating Indian tourists and international travelers entering Nepal through the Indian border.

The Department of Customs, under the Ministry of Finance, developed this digital system to allow foreign vehicle owners to fill out necessary details, submit declarations, and pay customs revenue online.

Inauguration by Finance Minister

The system was officially inaugurated by Finance Minister Dr. Swarnim Wagle. During the launch, Minister Wagle emphasized that this digital transition is a step toward fulfilling the government’s commitment to good governance and efficient public service delivery.

“We want to ensure that tourists face no difficulties at the border. This service is designed to eliminate the hassles previously faced by visitors at customs points, making the entry process fast and transparent,” stated Minister Wagle.

Key Features of the Online TIV System

The new Temporary Import of Vehicles (TIV) module, integrated into the Nepal National Single Window system, brings several major changes:

Remote Registration: Tourists can now fill out their vehicle permit applications from the comfort of their homes before reaching the border.

Digital Payments: Revenue and fees can be paid online or via designated bank counters, eliminating the need for physical cash transactions at customs.

QR Code Entry: Once the payment is confirmed, a QR code is sent to the user’s email. This code serves as the official permit and can be shown to authorities at the border and throughout the journey within Nepal.

Seamless Extensions: Previously, tourists had to return to a customs office or pay heavy fines to renew an expired permit. Now, travelers can extend their vehicle’s stay duration online from anywhere within Nepal.

To utilize this facility, visitors should:

1. Visit the official Department of Customs website.

2. Navigate to the “Our Services” section.

3. Click on the “TIV” (Temporary Import of Vehicles) title.

4. Complete the online form and proceed with the payment.

Impact on Regional Tourism

Director General of the Department of Customs, Shyam Prasad Mainali, noted that the system makes the entire process transparent and effective. While the service is currently focused on land routes from India and Bangladesh, the department confirmed that the system is also ready to accommodate tourists coming from the Chinese border in the future.

This digital transformation is expected to significantly reduce wait times at major entry points like Birgunj, Bhairahawa, and Kakarbhitta, providing a much-needed welcome to international road-trippers and spiritual travelers.
