Problematic Cooperative Management Committee Refunds Savings To Vulnerable Depositors

The Problematic Cooperative Management Committee has refunded nearly 1.2 million rupees in total savings to 48 depositors whose funds were locked in institutions declared financially troubled by the Government of Nepal.
Problematic Cooperatives’ Savings Refunded
The action forms part of an ongoing government initiative to provide relief to affected members, manage asset-liability balances, and address structural issues within the cooperative sector.
Targeted Priority Eligibility Criteria
To support the most vulnerable individuals first, the committee distributed the refunds based on specific priority criteria. Eligible categories under this current wave of payouts include:
- Senior citizens aged 70 years and above.
- Depositors with severe or life-threatening medical conditions certified by licensed physicians.
- Single women.
- Persons living with complete physical disabilities.
- Depositors holding total savings exceeding 500,000 rupees.
Refund Structure And Relief Caps
Under the current government relief framework, qualifying depositors are eligible to receive up to 50 percent of their total deposited savings in a single payment, subject to a maximum cap of 50,000 rupees per transaction.

The recent distribution granted 25,000 rupees to each of the 48 verified applicants. Beneficiaries included 37 depositors from Kantipur Savings and Credit Cooperative, four from Gautamshree Multipurpose Cooperative, three from Krishi Bikas Multipurpose Cooperative, two from Ideal Yamuna Multipurpose Cooperative, and two from Pashupati Savings and Credit Cooperative.
Legal Basis And Future Operations
The committee noted that the refund process aligns with statutory guidelines outlined in the Cooperative Act, 2074 BS, relevant directive orders issued by the Supreme Court of Nepal, and the government’s strategic action plan.
Verification and disbursement operations will continue in scheduled phases. Future payouts will follow approved priority categories as the committee processes, verifies, and approves submitted claims from depositors across all government-declared problematic cooperatives.
