Upakar Laghubitta Net Profit Surges 252 Percent Despite Higher Non Performing Loans
7th August 2026, Kathmandu
Upakar Laghubitta Bittiya Sanstha Limited has reported a strong financial performance for the fiscal year 2025/26.
Upakar Laghubitta Profit Surges
The microfinance institution registered a sharp increase in overall profitability, supported by core revenue growth and a significant reduction in impairment provisions. The annual report reflects higher interest income, improved operating performance, and a turnaround in distributable profit, even as the non-performing loan ratio experienced a notable increase during the review period.
The company posted a total net profit of 56.1 million Nepali Rupees for the fiscal period. This financial result represents an impressive 252.72% surge compared to the net profit of 15.9 million Nepali Rupees reported in the previous fiscal year.
Triple Digit Expansion in Net Profit and Earnings
The strong performance in net earnings underlines a major operational recovery for Upakar Laghubitta. Lower impairment charges alongside expanding interest margins allowed the microfinance lender to convert a higher proportion of its gross income into bottom-line profits.
The net earnings growth highlights the success of the institutional efforts to rebuild profitability following previous provision burdens. The sharp rise in overall profit reinforces the capital base of the organization and builds corporate financial strength.
Growth in Net Interest and Fee Income
Core banking operations contributed steadily to the revenue baseline of Upakar Laghubitta Bittiya Sanstha Limited. Net interest income increased to 215.4 million Nepali Rupees during the fiscal period, compared to 176.8 million Nepali Rupees recorded in the prior fiscal year.
Fee and commission streams also experienced positive momentum throughout the review period. Net fee and commission income rose from 24.0 million Nepali Rupees to reach 29.7 million Nepali Rupees, providing secondary revenue support to total operational income.
Lower Impairment Charges Boost Total Operating Revenue
A primary driver behind the profit acceleration was the substantial reduction in loan impairment expenses. Impairment charges dropped significantly from 50.9 million Nepali Rupees in the previous fiscal year to 27.4 million Nepali Rupees in the current period.
Reduced provisioning costs allowed total operating income to rise to 245.1 million Nepali Rupees, up from 200.8 million Nepali Rupees in the corresponding period. Driven by revenue expansion and controlled impairment costs, total operating profit climbed sharply from 22.8 million Nepali Rupees to 80.2 million Nepali Rupees.
Positive Turnaround in Distributable Profit
Upakar Laghubitta achieved a financial turnaround in its distributable earnings capacity. The distributable profit of the company improved from a negative 38.3 million Nepali Rupees in the previous fiscal year to a positive balance of 4.9 million Nepali Rupees.
The return to positive distributable profit reflects improved balance sheet health and marks a key step toward regaining normal dividend distribution capability for shareholders.
Shareholder Returns and Key Financial Indicators
The surge in annual profit resulted in enhanced returns for equity holders. Earnings per share surged from 15.01 Nepali Rupees in the prior fiscal period to reach 52.93 Nepali Rupees.
Net worth per share was recorded at a strong 305.54 Nepali Rupees, supported by accumulated reserves. The base rate of the microfinance institution stood at 12.11% at the close of the review period.
Rising Non Performing Loans Indicate Asset Quality Challenges
Despite the strong performance in profitability, the asset quality of Upakar Laghubitta deteriorated. The non-performing loan ratio nearly doubled during the fiscal year, rising from 4.85% to reach 9.97%.
The increase in delinquent loans points to persistent recovery challenges across microfinance borrowers, requiring careful credit monitoring and proactive recovery strategies in upcoming quarters.
Deposit Growth and Capital Reserves Balance Sheet
The balance sheet structure of Upakar Laghubitta showed stable liability growth alongside a slight reduction in overall lending volume. Total customer deposits expanded from 1.40 billion Nepali Rupees in the previous year to 1.64 billion Nepali Rupees, reflecting steady public confidence in the institution.
Conversely, total loans and advances registered a minor decline, moving from 2.37 billion Nepali Rupees down to 2.30 billion Nepali Rupees as the company adopted a cautious lending approach amid rising asset quality risks.
The paid-up capital of the institution stood at 106.1 million Nepali Rupees, while reserve funds reached 213.2 million Nepali Rupees, maintaining a solid capital adequacy buffer.
Overall Financial Position and Operational Outlook
Upakar Laghubitta Bittiya Sanstha Limited concluded the fiscal year with strong net earnings growth, higher operating margins, reduced provisioning burdens, and a positive distributable profit. While rising non-performing loans present an operational hurdle, the solid earnings growth and strong reserve base position the microfinance lender to manage risk effectively as it enters the new fiscal period.
