NBA Session Highlights Cybersecurity Challenges and Emerging Risks for Nepal’s BFIs
13th August 2026, Kathmandu
As Nepal’s banking and financial institutions (BFIs) rapidly accelerate digital transformation, expanding mobile banking, cloud integration, and real-time payment systems, the digital attack surface is expanding concurrently.
NBA Cybersecurity Challenges
To address these evolving vulnerabilities, the Nepal Bankers’ Association (NBA) recently organized a pivotal virtual knowledge-sharing session titled “Cybersecurity Challenges, Emerging Risks & Opportunities: A Regional Perspective.”
Aimed at enhancing knowledge and building robust cyber resilience across Nepal’s financial sector, the session convened industry leaders to dissect the shifting threat landscape and explore proactive defense strategies.
Key Highlights from the Session
The virtual session was led by Mr. Giridhar Rangavajalla, Chief Information Security Officer (South Asia and India) at Standard Chartered Bank, India. Drawing from a vast regional canvas, Mr. Rangavajalla delivered critical insights into the modern threat matrix facing financial institutions:
The South Asian Threat Landscape: An analysis of how cross-border and regional cyber-risk environments are shifting, requiring localized banks to anticipate sophisticated, multi-vector attacks.
Third-Party Vendor Risks: Particular emphasis was placed on the vulnerabilities introduced by external technology partners, vendors, and interconnected digital ecosystems. As banks outsource infrastructure and specialized digital platforms, securing the supply chain has become a paramount board-level concern.
Incident Response & Preparedness: Moving beyond theoretical prevention, the session stressed the necessity of rigorous, tested response mechanisms to minimize downtime, ensure rapid containment, and maintain operational continuity during a breach.
Building Long-Term Cyber Resilience: Practical blueprints on how financial institutions can systematically identify, quantify, and mitigate emerging operational risks.
Why Regional Cyber Resilience Matters for Nepal’s BFIs
With digital transactions scaling across urban and semi-urban landscapes in Nepal, cybersecurity is no longer just an IT checkbox—it is a core pillar of institutional governance and financial stability. Collaborative knowledge-sharing initiatives by bodies like the NBA bridge critical gaps, empowering local institutions to align with international best practices and regulatory compliance frameworks.
By fostering regional dialogue and adopting a proactive posture against third-party and systemic vulnerabilities, Nepal’s financial sector can continue to drive digital innovation while fiercely protecting customer trust and institutional assets.
