Government Directs Inter-Company LPG Cylinder Exchange to Ease Kathmandu Gas Shortage

The supply of Liquefied Petroleum Gas in the Kathmandu Valley has encountered significant disruptions following recent floods.

To address the resulting shortage and provide immediate relief to households, Minister for Industry, Commerce and Supplies Gauri Kumari Yadav has issued directives to concerned authorities to implement an emergency inter-company cylinder exchange system across the valley.

Key Highlights of the Emergency Gas Distribution Directive
The new arrangement aims to ensure uninterrupted access to cooking gas by removing brand specific restrictions during the supply crisis.
- Universal Cylinder Exchange: Consumers can exchange their empty LPG cylinders for filled ones from any available brand within the Kathmandu Valley.
- Standardized Pricing: Inter-company cylinder exchanges will be processed at the same price as standard refills without extra charges for brand swapping.
- Instant Relief Measure: The interchange system allows consumers whose usual brand is unavailable to obtain cooking gas immediately using alternative company cylinders.
- Emergency Response: The initiative was enacted specifically to mitigate hardship caused by flood induced supply chain disruptions.
Implementation and Relief Measures
The ministry secretariat confirmed on Wednesday that instructions have been dispatched to all relevant distribution bodies and gas companies to execute the decision without delay. By enabling seamless cross-brand refilling, the government expects to restore normal household gas availability and prevent artificial scarcity throughout the Kathmandu Valley during the post-flood recovery period.
