The central bank enacted the regulatory adjustment to reduce cash reliance and promote digital transactions such as transferring festival gifts and monetary blessings (Dakshina) electronically.
- Regulatory Amendment Scope: NRB issued an amendment to the Unified Directives on Payment Systems to relax transaction frequency ceilings for individual digital wallets.
- Deposit Frequency Increase: Individual account holders can now load or deposit funds into digital wallets up to 50 times per day.
- Previous Transaction Ceiling: Prior to this regulatory adjustment, the standard daily load frequency for natural persons was restricted to 10 transactions per day.
- First Implementation Window: The expanded deposit facility is operational during Dashain from Ashwin 31, 2083 (October 17, 2026) through Kartik 8, 2083 (October 25, 2026).
- Second Implementation Window: The facility will resume during Tihar and Chhath from Kartik 21, 2083 (November 7, 2026) through Kartik 29, 2083 (November 15, 2026).
- Promotion of Digital Dakshina: The policy aligns with NRB’s public appeal urging citizens to utilize digital payment platforms for distribution of festive gifts and Dakshina instead of physical banknotes.
- Policy Objectives: Designed to reduce paper currency demand, lower operational handling costs, and drive adoption of electronic payment channels during peak shopping periods.
