NLG Insurance Contributes NPR 2.5 Million to Post-Gen-G Reconstruction Fund
5th November 2025, Kathmandu
The recent Gen-G movement in Nepal, which was a powerful youth-led series of anti-corruption and pro-accountability protests, unfortunately resulted in significant damage to the nation’s public infrastructure.
NLG’s Contribution to Reconstruction Fund
In response to this need for national recovery, NLG Insurance Company Limited has demonstrated its commitment to Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) by contributing a substantial sum of NPR 2.5 million to the government’s dedicated Physical Infrastructure Reconstruction Fund.
This generous donation was formally presented by Sunil Ballabh Pant, the Chief Executive Officer of NLG Insurance, to Finance Minister Rameshwar Khanal at the Ministry of Finance. CEO Pant underscored that the contribution is aimed at playing a vital part in the large-scale effort to repair and rebuild the physical structures and public assets that were damaged, setting an example for other private sector entities to follow.
Understanding the Necessity: The Context of the Gen-G Movement Damages
The Gen-G movement, which took place in September 2025, was primarily driven by Generation Z students and young citizens frustrated with widespread government corruption, economic inequality, and a recent controversial social media shutdown. While successful in achieving its primary goals of pushing for governmental accountability and the resignation of the incumbent prime minister, the protests included instances of vandalism and arson that heavily impacted government buildings and political offices, including the central administrative complex, Singha Durbar.
The destruction spanned various essential public services, necessitating an immediate and concerted effort to restore the damaged structures and resume normal governmental and public functions. The sheer scale of the damage across the country, which included both human and material losses, underscored the need for a focused and well-funded recovery mechanism. NLG Insurance’s contribution is a timely injection of private capital into this essential national effort.
The Physical Infrastructure Reconstruction Fund: A Collective Effort
To manage the financial resources required for this extensive rehabilitation, the Government of Nepal, through the Ministry of Finance, established the Physical Infrastructure Reconstruction Fund. This fund’s mandate is comprehensive: to provide financing for the reconstruction and repair of damaged public infrastructure, offer relief and rehabilitation to those affected, and support overall economic recovery.
The fund is positioned as a collective national endeavor, appealing to a wide range of contributors, including federal, provincial, and local governments, the private sector, citizens both domestic and abroad, and international development partners. A key incentive for domestic contributors, like NLG Insurance, is that donations to the fund are generally tax-deductible in the current fiscal year, further encouraging corporate participation.
According to Ministry of Finance Spokesperson Tank Prasad Pandey, the fund had accumulated NPR 75,160,000 prior to NLG’s contribution. The addition of the NPR 2.5 million from NLG Insurance significantly boosts this total, demonstrating the private sector’s crucial role in national crisis recovery and rebuilding.
NLG Insurance’s Strategic Role in National Recovery
NLG Insurance Company Limited, which has a long track record in the Nepalese insurance market, is committed to providing essential financial protection services across life and general insurance sectors. By stepping forward with this donation, NLG Insurance is reinforcing its brand identity as a socially responsible corporate citizen dedicated to the broader welfare of the nation.
Insurance companies inherently play a vital role in managing risk and recovery following disasters, whether natural or human-made. NLG’s contribution aligns perfectly with this core function, extending its commitment beyond its policyholders to the national public infrastructure that serves every Nepali citizen. This act of corporate altruism serves several important purposes:
- It provides much-needed liquid funds for the immediate repair and reconstruction of damaged government buildings and public assets.
- It serves as a call to action for other large corporate entities and the broader private sector to dedicate resources to the national reconstruction cause.
- It enhances public goodwill and trust in the insurance sector, demonstrating that these institutions are partners in the nation’s stability and development.
In a country where development is often hampered by political instability and infrastructure damage, the quick mobilization of funds for reconstruction is paramount. NLG Insurance’s timely donation is a testament to the private sector’s capability to act decisively and responsibly in times of national need, contributing to the nation’s resilience and future stability.
