This initiative, spearheaded by Communications and IT Minister Jagadish Kharel, fulfills a commitment to provide complimentary internet services at critical and high-traffic public service areas.
The free service now covers key hospitals, the revered Pashupatinath Temple area, and the Tribhuvan International Airport (TIA). This expansion aims to ensure citizens can easily access essential digital services and stay connected while utilizing public infrastructure.
Enhancing Connectivity and Capacity
MoCIT confirms that previously established public WiFi zones underwent substantial maintenance and quality upgrades. The capacity of these networks has also seen significant expansion. Additionally, eight new locations are now operational with free internet, and work continues on three more sites.
Minister Kharel made this ambitious commitment his first decision upon taking office on September 22, setting a two-month target for the project’s completion within the Kathmandu Valley. His focus is on improving public service delivery through enhanced digital access.
New and Upgraded Locations
Several public service centers now feature new or significantly upgraded WiFi capacity. These include major transport and health facilities.
- New or Expanded Service: Kathmandu’s New Bus Park, Bhaktapur Hospital, Bhaktapur Cancer Hospital, Kirtipur Hospital, and Tribhuvan International Airport (TIA) are all now equipped with improved free WiFi access.
- Ongoing Work: Installation and capacity enhancement efforts are currently underway at the Thulobharyang Transport Management Office in Kathmandu and the Ekantakuna Transport Management Office in Lalitpur. Furthermore, a new installation is in progress at the Radhe-Radhe Transport Management Office in Bhaktapur.
Major Bandwidth Upgrade at Health Centers
The Nepal Telecommunications Authority (NTA) oversaw a massive bandwidth upgrade at several existing locations, focusing heavily on major health centers.
At key sites like Bir Hospital, Paropakar Maternity Hospital, TU Teaching Hospital, Kanti Children’s Hospital, Gangalal National Heart Center, and the Pashupatinath Temple complex, the bandwidth has seen a dramatic increase.
The capacity has been boosted from a minimal 10 Megabits per second (Mbps) to a robust 150 Mbps. Furthermore, the data allowance per device has been increased fivefold, from 100 Megabytes (MB) to 500 MB. This significant leap ensures users can access information quickly and reliably.
A Sustainable Partnership for Public Service
The long-term sustainability and continuation of the free public WiFi service are secured through formal agreements. Concerned public institutions finalized contracts with three major Internet Service Providers (ISPs) to manage the service.
Nepal Telecom, Worldlink, and Vianet Communications are the service providers that actively collaborated with the NTA, under the Minister’s directive, to successfully roll out and manage this expanded network of free public internet access points.
Future Outlook: Connecting Cities Nationwide
Looking beyond the valley, the Ministry is actively progressing with a plan to extend Free WiFi Kathmandu public access to other key areas.
Work is already underway to bring free internet connectivity to ten other important cities outside of the Kathmandu Valley, ensuring that the benefits of the digital transformation are felt nationwide. This concerted effort marks a major step toward creating a truly digitally connected nation.
