In a historic milestone for Nepalese cinema, Kathmandu Metropolitan City (KMC) Acting Mayor Sunita Dangol stated that the selection of a Nepalese feature film at the world-renowned Cannes Film Festival is a matter of immense pride for the entire country.

Speaking to journalists at the Tribhuvan International Airport on Saturday upon her return from France, Acting Mayor Dangol emphasized that this achievement marks a significant breakthrough for the domestic film industry on the global stage.
Dangol, who personally attended the world premiere of the selected Nepalese film at Cannes, shared her excitement regarding the historic moment.
“The inclusion of a Nepalese feature film at the Cannes Film Festival for the first time in history is an incredibly significant and proud moment for all Nepalese. It truly represents a monumental achievement for our cinema industry,” Dangol said.
KMC to Strengthen the Creative Sector with New Policy
Beyond celebrating the cinematic milestone, Acting Mayor Dangol highlighted Kathmandu Metropolitan City’s proactive steps toward institutionalizing the creative arts.
She revealed that KMC has recently passed a dedicated working procedure (directive) aimed at systematically managing and uplifting the creative sector.
During her interactions with representatives from various international cities at Cannes, Dangol shared KMC’s policy-driven approach, which surprised and impressed many global delegates.
“To give continuity and sustainable growth to the creative sector, we need proper policies, laws, and working frameworks. I shared our initiative of formulating this policy to make operations easier, and for many global cities, this institutional approach was completely new and inspiring,” she added.
Countdown to the First Kathmandu Film Festival
In another major announcement, the Acting Mayor shared that the metropolis is preparing to host the inaugural Kathmandu Film Festival. This will mark the first time the city administration is directly hosting a film festival of this scale.
According to Dangol, the international community at Cannes responded with great enthusiasm and appreciation upon learning about Kathmandu’s upcoming film festival, putting Nepalese cultural tourism and local filmmaking firmly on the global map.
