Chandra Prasad Dhakal Speech: IME Paper Mill Jobs, Sustainable Development, Nepal Economy
6th March 2025, Kathmandu
At the inauguration of Nepal Pulp and Paper Industries Pvt. Ltd., IME Group Chairman Chandra Prasad Dhakal highlighted the importance of this new venture for Nepal’s industrial development. The event was attended by high-ranking officials, including the Honorable Prime Minister, ministers, and local leaders.
Chandra Prasad Dhakal Speech
Dhakal called the opening of the factory a significant milestone for Nepal, marking a new era in the country’s industrial journey. He emphasized that the IME Group has contributed significantly to the country’s economy through sectors such as banking, insurance, remittance, tourism, IT, and hydropower. The paper mill represents a step towards self-sufficiency and a more sustainable industrial future.
Reducing Import Dependence
Nepal has long depended on the importation of paper products, spending millions of dollars every year. In the previous fiscal year alone, the country spent approximately NPR 12 billion on paper imports. The new paper mill aims to reduce this reliance by producing locally made photocopy paper and other paper products for the domestic market.
Recycling and Sustainability at Core
The factory’s eco-friendly approach stands out. Instead of using fresh raw materials, it recycles used paper from homes and offices. These recycled papers are processed to remove contaminants and then turned into high-quality products. This method helps reduce waste and supports environmental sustainability. The factory also minimizes air pollution by using a PCC plant, which produces calcium carbonate for use in paper production. This reduces the need for imports and lowers emissions. Additionally, the factory recycles water used in production, reducing its environmental impact.
Job Creation and Local Impact
The project has created over 300 direct jobs and is expected to benefit thousands more indirectly. Dhakal highlighted the importance of employing local workers, especially women, in the factory. Over 50% of the workforce will be from nearby areas. The mill also supports the local economy by involving small businesses in the collection and recycling of used paper.
Positive Message for Investors
Dhakal expressed confidence that this new venture would send a positive signal to both local and international investors. He stressed that the success of this project is a reflection of the country’s potential for economic growth and investment opportunities.
Call for Continued Infrastructure Development
While optimistic about the future, Dhakal raised concerns about challenges in infrastructure development. He urged all political and economic stakeholders to support efforts that promote sustainable growth, job creation, and investment. He emphasized that infrastructure development should not be hindered as it plays a critical role in Nepal’s economic progress.
A Step Towards Prosperity
In his closing remarks, Dhakal reaffirmed that the Nepal Pulp and Paper Industries is more than just a paper production facility. It is a key initiative aimed at achieving economic independence, creating jobs, and promoting sustainable development for Nepal’s future prosperity.
