The Community Network Xchange – Asia Pacific (CNX-APAC) Nepal Chapter 2024 concluded successfully today at Texas International College, Mitrapark, Kathmandu, bringing together experts and leaders from across the region to discuss community networks, gender equality in technology, digital inclusion, and innovative solutions for expanding internet connectivity in Nepal and South Asia.

The event was graced by Chief Guest Mr. Prithivi Subba Gurung, Minister for Communication and Information Technology, who virtually addressed the conference. Mr. Gurung congratulated the organizers and participants for their dedication to fostering community networks and strengthening digital infrastructure across the region, emphasizing the crucial role of technology in rural development.

The opening remarks were delivered by Mr. Bikram Shrestha, President of the Nepal Internet Foundation, who highlighted the importance of community networks in driving social change and the ongoing efforts to bridge the digital divide in marginalized and rural communities of Nepal.

Mr. Naveed Ul Haq, Regional Infrastructure and Connectivity Director of the Internet Society, delivered the keynote address. He emphasized the need to close the connectivity gap, particularly in remote regions, and underscored the importance of affordable internet for all, sharing insights from the Everest Community Network, a key initiative aimed at improving connectivity in the Himalayan region.

In his address, Mr. Saurabh Srivastava, Deputy Director of the Digital Empowerment Foundation, focused on gender inequality in internet access and the significant role of CNX in fostering digital inclusion, especially for women and underserved communities.

Other notable speakers included Mr. Vimal Kumar Hoda, Chairperson of Kathmandu Metropolitan Ward-7, who discussed Nepal’s technological advancements and their role in national development, and Dr. Shaligram Parajuli, Manager at Nepal Telecom, who spoke on the use of internet tools for local content development, inclusivity, and awareness creation in rural and mountainous regions.

A special address was delivered by Mr. Ganesh Shah, former Minister of Education, Science, and Technology, who highlighted the role of ICT in empowering women, supporting farmers, and enhancing educational opportunities through the Digital Nepal Framework.

The event concluded with a closing address by Mr. Gagan Kumar Thapa, Member of the House of Representatives of Nepal, who stressed the importance of collective efforts across all sectors to connect every part of Nepal with reliable internet access.

The final closing remarks were provided by Ms. GunaKeshari Pradhan, President of Women in Information Technology, and Prof. Timila Yami Thapa, Nepal’s first female ICT leader, both of whom reaffirmed the importance of women’s leadership in technology and digital innovation.

The event concluded with a vote of thanks from Mr. Chehen Lama, Founder of Technology for All, followed by cultural performances showcasing the rich heritage of Nepal.
