Website breaches and data dumps continue to be one of the biggest cyber threats in the case of Nepal. Since the very beginning of the lockdown, we have witnessed data breaches on the likes of Foodmandu and Vianet. Now, Nepali sites are being hacked by Indian hackers and most of you might already know the reason.

On May 24 (Sunday), Indian hackers attacked 45+ Nepali sites beginning with the official website of the Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal (CAAN).
A hacker by the name ‘GH057_5P3C706’ placed the Indian flag on the homepage of the site. Similarly, all other website domains related to the CAAN were also compromised. Moreover, the hacker confirmed the hack on twitter with the message “mess with the best and die like the rest”.
Though the website is back to its original self now, the related domains may still be accessible to hackers. And, it doesn’t end here!
Almost 6 hours after the breach, the hacker leaked the data of the Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal (CAAN).
The leaked data is available on MEGA (mega.nz).

In fact, the servers of the hacked websites are down at the moment. We hope it’s for fixing the breach.
The hacker team joined Twitter recently and it looks like they are going to join the likes of Indian Cyber Troops and others.
Final Say
Nepali and Indian hackers are going back and forth with the hacking. At one point, they had even agreed to stop hacking sites and let the government of both sides settle the dispute in a diplomatic way. However, yesterday’s hacking of 45+ Nepali websites proves that they are not going to stop.
We know two things for certain due to these incidents. Firstly, the cybersecurity of Nepali websites is too weak. And the second thing is that Nepali hackers are not backing down either. This will lead to no good for either of the parties.
We hope that this ‘Cyberwar’ comes to an end soon. Also, we would like to urge Nepali cybersecurity experts to look into these incidents and help us prevent further attacks on Nepali websites (or systems).
