A research validation workshop focused on ‘Enhancing Parental Roles in Protecting Children from Online Sexual Exploitation and Abuse’ is set to take place. The workshop will feature preliminary findings from a study conducted by a research team with a grant from the Safe Online Fund. The primary objective of the workshop is to gather valuable inputs from participants to validate and further analyze these findings.

Enhancing Parental Roles in Child Online Protection

Research Focus: Online Child Sexual Exploitation and Abuse in Nepal

The study aims to explore the knowledge, perceptions, attitudes, and practices of parents in Nepal regarding online child sexual exploitation and abuse. Conducted in the Kathmandu and Lalitpur districts, the research involved a comprehensive approach, including surveys, focus group discussions, and key informant interviews. The findings seek to inform appropriate technological interventions and policy recommendations.

Stakeholder Participation and Valuable Insights

The workshop will bring together government officials, law enforcement personnel, legal experts, development partners, and other key stakeholders. Their inputs will be crucial in shaping effective policy recommendations and intervention plans to address parenting challenges in the digital age. The collaboration is expected to enhance national coordination and international cooperation to protect children from online risks and potential harm.

Parental Roles in Child Online Guest Speaker: Mr. Chiranjibi Adhikari on Global Challenges and Solutions

Mr. Chiranjibi Adhikari, a cybersecurity expert and General Secretary of CAN Federation, will be the guest speaker. He emphasized that Child Online Protection (COP) is not only a challenge for Nepal but also a global issue. He advocates for a holistic approach, international cooperation, and national coordination to safeguard children from online threats while enabling them to benefit from online opportunities.

Addressing Technological Addiction and Cyberbullying

The workshop will also address significant obstacles in protecting children in the digital age, such as technological addiction and cyberbullying. Video games, social networks, and various applications are designed to be addictive, capturing children’s attention for prolonged periods. Cyberbullying, exacerbated by online anonymity, is another critical concern. Practical suggestions for parents to help their children navigate the digital world safely include:

  • Communicating with children about online behavior.
  • Helping children manage emotions when feeling excluded.
  • Blocking access to inappropriate content where possible.
  • Regularly checking children’s phones.
  • Setting daily time limits for electronic device use.
  • Prohibiting device use in bedrooms at night and during meals.

Conclusion: The Importance of Parental Guidance in the Digital Age

The workshop aims to highlight the importance of parental supervision and guidance in children’s use of technology. While technology can be a powerful tool for learning and entertainment, appropriate supervision is essential to avoid potential problems. The outcomes of this workshop are expected to provide significant contributions to developing effective strategies for protecting children online.
