U.K. lawmakers said, “Tech- firms like Facebook should be made responsible and liable for fake news and misleading content on their sites and pay fine so they can be regulated”. There has been a warning of a crisis in democracy due to misuse of personal data, added the lawmakers.

After the data of 87 million users were improperly accessed by British-headquartered consultancy Cambridge Analytica Facebook has increasingly become a focus of the media committee’s inquiry.

“As the work of improving privacy safeguards and slowing usage in its top advertising markets is going on, Facebook’s profit margins had to plummet several times”, informed Facebook executives.

“Companies like Facebook has made developers easy to scrape user data and deploy it into other campaigns without their knowledge or consent,” said Damian Collins, chair of the Digital, Culture, Media and Sport Committee
