In a groundbreaking decision, the Federation of Nepalese Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FNCCI) has amended its constitution to introduce significant reforms.
FNCCI Leadership Election Reforms 2024
The amendments, approved in a special general meeting on Tuesday, introduce a direct election system for the president and policies to increase female representation in leadership.
Direct Elections for President: A Step Toward Democracy
FNCCI has replaced the old system where the president was chosen from senior vice presidents with a direct election process. This change ensures that the president is elected fairly by the general membership.
Anjan Shrestha, the current senior vice president, will automatically become president when Chandra Prasad Dhakal’s term ends.
This reform aims to bring more transparency and allow members to have a direct say in the leadership.
Shortened Presidential Term and Focus on Female Leadership
The president’s term has also been shortened to two years, down from three. This new term structure will take effect after Dhakal’s tenure.
A key change focuses on increasing female participation in leadership. The revised constitution requires at least one female vice president in the executive committee.
However, this role can only be filled if there are at least 12 female members on the committee. This reform shows FNCCI’s commitment to empowering women and involving them in decision-making.
Senior Vice President to Be Selected by the Executive Committee
The senior vice president will no longer be automatically chosen from the senior vice president rank. The executive committee will now select the senior vice president. FNCCI will continue to have two vice presidents from each district or municipality to ensure wider regional representation.
A Modernized and Inclusive Future for FNCCI
These changes show FNCCI’s commitment to embracing more democratic and inclusive practices. With direct elections for the president and a focus on gender equality, the FNCCI is moving towards a more progressive and representative future.
By prioritizing gender diversity and transparent leadership, FNCCI aims to better serve its members and promote a fair business environment. The amended constitution is expected to create more opportunities for female entrepreneurs and encourage a more inclusive leadership structure.
As FNCCI moves forward with these reforms, it signals a new era for Nepal’s business landscape, where leadership is chosen by the people and every member has a voice.
