FOURTH INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY DAY: PRIME MINISTER ADDRESSING THROUGH VIRTUAL MEDIUM:
Every year the government marks National Information Technology Day on the 2nd of May. The main aim of celebrating national ICT day is to promote technology and development in ICT. The initiative to celebrate this day was done by the Federation of Computer Association Nepal(FCAN). As history depicts, the first computer was introduced in Nepal in May. Similarly, the month of May marks the establishment of the Federation of CAN as well. In this way, the National ICT Day is celebrated in May.
The fourth National Information and Communication Technology Day are being celebrated on Sunday. The Ministry of Communications and Information Technology has organized a virtual program on the occasion of the day. According to the ministry, Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli is scheduled to address the event at 11 am.
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the government is implementing virtual methods for celebrating the event. Otherwise, in the spirit of the ICT celebration, there was a program of initiation of a social awareness march that started from Bhrikutimandap to Basantapur. This day comes as an effort from the government to establish, encourage, and implement ICT practices across all government and non-government sectors.
On occasion, government spokesperson and Minister for Communications and Information Technology Parbat Gurung have issued a congratulatory message. Minister Gurung informed that the government aims to fulfill the national resolution of “Prosperous Nepal: Happy Nepali” by connecting every sector with information and communication technology as per the demands of the modern age.
Minister Gurung has mentioned that the government has launched the ‘Citizen App’ to provide all government services to the citizens online to build information technology friendly Nepal. Gurung mentioned that the government had introduced the ‘Information Technology Bill’ in the parliament to prevent the misuse of the information technology sector and provide easy access to the development of the information technology sector.
Policies, programs, and budgets have been arranged to establish and operate information technology centers at each local level. He said that Five G testing had been taken forward to improve the quality of telecommunication services, and special attention has been paid to the security of cybercrime control, cybersecurity, and security of government data centers.
Events like National ICT Day are very vital to move forward digitally with smartness. The ICT sector drives the nation towards the digital era. Similarly, it can pave the path towards Digital Nepal by supporting the framework. The government has realized the importance of the ICT sector and endorsed the National ICT Day. The government has organized virtual events, especially when social distancing is the topmost priority. It will both raise awareness and display the use of ICT that can potentially shape our future.
In conclusion, on National ICT Day, we would like to wish all the citizens and hope for more IT initiatives in further days.
