Kantipur Media Group (KMG) has officially appointed Gokarna Awasthi as the new Editor-in-Chief of Kantipur Daily, Nepal’s leading vernacular newspaper.

Awasthi, a seasoned professional with over two decades of experience in journalism, economic analysis, and academia, is set to take charge of the newsroom effective from May 5, 2026, according to a report by eKantipur.
A Distinguished Career in Media and Policy
Awasthi is a familiar name within Kantipur, having previously served as the head of the Economic Bureau for the daily. His career spans various prestigious leadership and advisory roles across Nepal’s private and public sectors:
Journalism Leadership: Former President of the Society of Economic Journalists-Nepal (SEJAN).
Corporate Governance: Served as the Director General of the Federation of Nepalese Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FNCCI).
Policy & Sustainability: Worked as a Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) Advisor for the United Nations office in Nepal.
Financial Sector: Previously served as a board member of the Securities Board of Nepal (SEBON).
Selection Process
The vacancy for the Editor-in-Chief position was announced following the resignation of Umesh Chauhan. In a move toward organizational transparency, Kantipur Media Group opened a formal application process to fill the top editorial role.
Out of the 17 applications received, KMG shortlisted three finalists. After a rigorous evaluation of their vision and expertise, the selection committee chose Awasthi to lead the publication into its next phase of digital and print evolution.
