26th October 2026, Kathmandu
Nepal’s Ministry of Infrastructure Development announces plans to build eight floodlit cricket stadiums with an 8,000-spectator capacity across major cities within three years, paving the way for a home-and-away Nepal Premier League format.
In a major push for Nepalese sports infrastructure, the Ministry of Infrastructure Development has officially initiated the construction process for eight modern cricket stadiums across key cities nationwide. Each facility will feature high-capacity seating and floodlight installations, designed to transform the Nepal Premier League (NPL) into a true home-and-away tournament within three years.
Infrastructure Development Minister Sunil Lamsal announced the government’s strategic roadmap via social media as the third edition of the Nepal Premier League kicks off today.
Key Infrastructure Specifications & Timeline
The planned development aims to decentralize professional cricket beyond the Kathmandu Valley, setting up international-standard venues across the country:
Minimum Spectator Capacity: 8,000 seats per stadium.
Day-Night Match Support: Advanced floodlight systems installed at all eight venues.
Execution Window: Complete rollout targeted within a strict three-year timeline.
Primary Objective: Transitioning the NPL from a single-venue tournament to a multi-city home-and-away format.
Minister Lamsal highlighted that introducing regional grounds will broaden the fan base, boost localized sports tourism, and upgrade domestic training facilities for aspiring athletes nationwide.
Call to Action for CAN
With the infrastructure pipeline set, Minister Lamsal called upon the Cricket Association of Nepal (CAN) to align its organizational strategies. CAN has been urged to prepare match operations, franchise logistics, and regional hosting frameworks to seamlessly adopt the home-and-away model as construction progresses.
The announcement coincides with the opening day of NPL Season 3. Extending his best wishes to all eight franchises, players, and officials, Minister Lamsal reiterated the government’s commitment to building lasting sports infrastructure across Nepal.
