The International Telecommunication Union (ITU) is a specialized agency of the United Nations (UN). It is responsible for coordinating international telecommunications and information and communication technology (ICT) standards and policies.

The International Telecommunication Union (ITU), a specialized organization of the United Nations for information and communication technology, has launched its regional office and innovation center in New Delhi, India. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the regional office and innovation center in a program held at Vigyan Bhavan on Wednesday.

According to the association, the said office will provide telecommunication services to India, Nepal, Bhutan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Maldives, Afghanistan, and Iran and also play a role in increasing coordination between these countries. At the official opening ceremony, Indian Prime Minister Modi also said that the new office and innovation center of ITU in India will take initiatives to increase cooperation between South Asian countries and reduce the regional digital divide.

Furthermore, Doreen Bogdan-Martin, Secretary General of ITU, thought that the presence of ITU in the Asia Pacific region will bring the countries here closer through sustainable connectivity, advanced technology, cyber security, digital inclusion, etc. “India is a role model for countries that want digital transformation,” she said.

Similarly, The new office will implement ITU’s initiatives in South Asian countries as well as provide technical assistance. And policy guidance in the development of information and communication technology, according to a statement issued by the association. According to reports, the innovation center will exchange cutting-edge ideas and promote cutting-edge technology. In addition, ITU has stated that it aims to contribute to the development of ICT and telecommunication communication and services in South Asia.

Earlier, the regional office of ITU in Bangkok, Thailand used to look at Asia and the Pacific region. After opening an office in Delhi, it will be easier to address the telecommunication opportunities and challenges of South Asian countries, said Kasmam Lakisan Javajabha, Director of the Telecommunication Development Branch of ITU. A team from Nepal including Minister of Communication and Information Technology Rekha Sharma went to Delhi on Tuesday evening to participate in the program.
