The goal is to enhance teaching and learning through technology. Kathmandu Metropolitan City has procured 313 smart boards via a public procurement process. These boards are now being installed in schools after technical checks by the Department of Information Technology.
First Installation at Padmodaya School
The first smart board was installed at Padmodaya Secondary School, located on Ramshah Path. The smart board is set up in Class 10 Section ‘A’. This is the first step in the city’s plan to modernize the classrooms. This installation marks the official launch of the smart board project in the city’s community schools.
Training Comes First for Teachers
Before installing the smart boards, Kathmandu Metropolitan City is focusing on teacher training. Schools with trained teachers will receive smart boards first. For schools with untrained teachers, training will be provided. Only after the training will the smart boards be installed. This ensures teachers can effectively use the new technology.
Durable Smart Boards for Long-Term Use
The smart boards have a display capacity of 50,000 hours. Kathmandu Metropolitan City claims the boards are highly durable. They are resistant to cracks and breakage from regular use. This makes the boards suitable for long-term use in classrooms.
A Technology-Driven Education Initiative
The smart board installation is part of a broader initiative to modernize education. Kathmandu Metropolitan City aims to make education more technology-friendly. By investing in both teaching methods and technology, the city hopes to improve learning outcomes. Kathmandu Metropolitan City has allocated NPR 20 crore for digital learning and teacher training programs.
Strategic Plan for Board Installation
Engineer Shailendra Jha, a member of the Urban Planning Commission, shared the installation strategy. He explained that schools will receive smart boards based on teacher readiness and infrastructure. Schools with trained teachers will receive the boards first. The plan ensures that the technology will be used effectively from the start.
Teacher Training Is Key
In addition to installing smart boards, Kathmandu Metropolitan City is focusing on teacher development. Teachers will receive proper training on how to use the smart boards. The city is also improving curricula and learning materials. The goal is to equip teachers with the skills needed to make the most of the new technology.
Interactive Learning for Students
The smart boards will create a more engaging learning environment for students. The boards will help make lessons more interactive and interesting. Students will be able to engage more in class activities. This shift is aligned with Kathmandu Metropolitan City’s “Bookless Fridays” program. This program focuses on creating a more interactive learning experience.
A Collaborative Learning Approach
Kathmandu Metropolitan City has also included 25 subjects under the “Bookless Fridays” initiative. These subjects are designed to promote group work and peer learning. By incorporating project-based learning, Kathmandu Metropolitan City aims to provide students with a more hands-on and practical education. This approach will help students develop problem-solving and critical thinking skills.
Looking Ahead
Kathmandu Metropolitan City’s smart board project is just the beginning. The city plans to gradually expand the initiative to more schools. As more teachers are trained, smart boards will be installed in additional classrooms. Kathmandu Metropolitan City hopes that this project will lead to better learning outcomes and a more technology-driven education system.
