LG Data Fellowship Program

18th July 2023, Kathmandu

Data has become a potent tool for effective decision-making and governance. Recognizing its significance, Open Knowledge Nepal launched the “Local Government (LG) Data Fellowship” program, aiming to support municipal bodies in digitizing their data and utilizing it for informed decision-making.

 Collaboration for Better Governance

The fellowship successfully implemented the Integrated Data Management System (IDMS) in three municipalities: Tulsipur Sub-Metropolitan City, Birgunj Metropolitan City, and Lekbeshi Municipality. The selected fellows worked closely with municipal personnel to collect, clean, and integrate datasets into IDMS, fostering data-driven insights.

Seven-Month Fellowship Journey

Throughout the seven-month-long fellowship from December 2022 to June 2023, the fellows received valuable training and experience on data lifecycle, IDMS operation procedures, and municipality policy development. They also collaborated on IDMS operations and facilitated communication between the municipality and Open Knowledge Nepal.

Key Accomplishments

The fellowship’s key accomplishments include enhancing data competency in fellows, enabling them to use data effectively for decision-making. Additionally, they collected and mapped data related to municipality operations and service delivery, ensuring its accessibility through IDMS for both departmental and public use.

 Advancing Informed Governance

The LG Data Fellowship program, supported by the Data for Development Programme, has empowered individuals from project municipalities to make data-informed decisions, contributing to effective governance and policy implementation.
