LOCUS 2027 Software Fellowship: Build and Launch Live Apps from Scratch

The 23rd National Technical Festival, LOCUS 2027, has successfully concluded its highly anticipated 8-Day Software Fellowship program. This initiative gave dozens of young students in Nepal something traditional classrooms rarely provide: the hands-on experience of building a real software application from scratch and deploying it live for the public.

While many short-term tech training programs in Nepal teach isolated topics a few days of frontend theory, a few days of backend concepts, followed by a generic certificate LOCUS took a fundamentally practical approach. The results spoke for themselves.
From Blank Canvas to Live Software
Instead of learning fragmented skills, participants continuously developed a single project from day one through day eight. Projects that started as empty workspaces transformed into fully functional, internet-accessible web applications by the final day.
Students who entered the program with little to no prior coding knowledge graduated with a complete software application featuring:

Industry-Aligned Curriculum
The curriculum mirrored the exact skills modern technology companies demand. Participants learned teamwork through Git and GitHub, built REST APIs with Python’s FastAPI, managed SQL/NoSQL databases, and implemented user authentication.
Integrating Artificial Intelligence Responsibly
Recognizing AI as an integral part of modern software engineering, the fellowship devoted significant time to the basics of artificial intelligence and machine learning. Students explored supervised vs. unsupervised learning, dataset utilization, and responsible AI practices by successfully adding a working AI/ML feature to their projects.
A standout session focused on prompt engineering and AI tools. Students learned how to responsibly leverage tools like ChatGPT, Claude, Cursor, and GitHub Copilot for debugging, code reviews, and documentation enhancement, while also learning how to identify and verify AI hallucinations. This ensured students treated AI tools as powerful productivity enhancers rather than shortcuts.
Cloud Deployment and Strategic Partners
To bridge local development with global accessibility, a dedicated cloud and deployment session was hosted at AWS Pulchowk, teaching students how to take their projects live from localhost to the global internet.
The success of the fellowship was heavily amplified by key partner contributions:

GitHub served as the Supporting Partner, providing infrastructure and guidance for version control and code hosting.

DataHub Nepal served as the Education Partner, awarding cloud storage prizes to the top three winners of the closing-day quiz, giving students direct exposure to professional cloud infrastructure.

Running for just two hours a day (7:00 AM – 9:00 AM or 5:00 PM – 7:00 PM), the fellowship was seamlessly structured to accommodate school, college, or work schedules.
By replacing passive lectures with daily lab exercises and live product deployment, LOCUS 2027 redefined how technical skill-building is approached in Nepal’s tech festivals—giving students their first true taste of professional software engineering.
