Nepal-China Tech Collaboration Event in Guangzhou

The Office of Nepal’s Consulate General in Guangzhou organised an event on Tuesday (8th April) to promote tech ties between Nepal and China. Consul at the Nepali Consulate, mr Saroj Bhattarai, welcomed all the distinguished participants.

Addressing the event entitled Fostering Innovation and Investment: Strengthening Nepal-China Tech Ties on Tuesday, Nepal’s Consul General, Bharat Khanal, said that Nepal is undergoing a digital transformation, with a growing startup ecosystem, an expanding ICT industry, and a rising demand for cutting-edge technology in various fields such as agriculture, tourism, manufacturing, and financial services.
“The year 2025 marks the 70th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries. Today, this relationship evolves into a dynamic partnership in trade, infrastructure, and technology. China’s remarkable advancements in AI, 5G, and digital economy inspire us, and we seek to align Nepal’s emerging tech landscape with your expertise to create a synergy that benefits both nations,” said Mr Khanal adding, “Nepal is no longer just the land of Himalayas; we are rapidly becoming a hub for innovation. With 60% of our population under 35, we boast a young, tech-savvy, English-speaking workforce ready to drive the digital future.”
Consul General Khanal informed that recently Nepal‘s parliament has passed new laws paving the way for global expansion, fostering international collaborations, and unlocking new investment opportunities for IT industry. Our government has launched transformative initiatives to harness this potential,” he added.
Consul General Khanal also invited Chinese investors and tech leaders to invest in Nepal’s high-growth sectors: software development, IT services, and AI, partner with Nepal’s tech hubs and innovation centers for R&D, and engage in knowledge exchange through academia-industry programs.
“Let us co-create a future where technology bridges our nations. The Government of Nepal pledges unwavering support through streamlined policies, investment security, and a collaborative ecosystem,” said Mr Khanal, adding, “We aim to create a conducive environment for sharing knowledge and best practices in technology. In an increasingly digital world, innovation is the key driver of economic growth and social development. By bringing together stakeholders from both sides, we hope to inspire new ideas and initiatives that can address shared challenges and unlock new opportunities.”

‘Nepal as an emerging tech hub’
During his keynote presentation, CEO of Genese Solution, a UK-based leading IT consulting and cybersecurity company, Mr Anjani Phuyal said that Nepal is an emerging digital powerhouse with thousands of ICT graduates coming to the market annually, 85,000-plus freelancers, and a $40 million digital gig economy.
“The ambitious Digital Nepal framework targets 8 key sectors, including health, education, and energy. There is an investment-ready tech ecosystem with 100% FDI allowed, 10-year tax holidays, and world-class clean energy infrastructure,” said Phuyal, who is alsoa top AWS ambassador for the UK and Ireland.
Nepal is strategically positioned as a low-cost, clean-energy tech destination between India and China. There is strong alignment with China’s Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) and shared interests in AI, digital infrastructure, and green technology.
“Huawei is working in Nepal in 4G and the future 5G connectivity. Nepali freelancers are building AI/ML models for Chinese startups. EV innovation partnerships and education exchange programs are undergoing with Confucius Institutes,” said Mr Phuyal.
He invited Chinese partners to co-create the future in AI, fintech, and digital infrastructure, together fostering a resilient, tech-driven Asia. He also called upon both governments to encourage joint R&D centers in SEZs, tech parks, bilingual EdTech platforms, and sovereign cloud initiatives, among others.
“Let’s build the future together. Nepal is not just open for business—it’s ready to lead in responsible, inclusive, tech-driven growth. Together with China, we can create a digital bridge that empowers millions,” said Mr Phuyal.
‘Nepal-China Cooperation’
Addressing the event, Secretary of the Party Group and Executive Vice President of Guangzhou Association for Science and Technology, Ms. Xu Liu said that as friendly neighboring countries sharing common mountains and rivers, China and Nepal have always adhered to the Five Principles of Peaceful Coexistence and achieved fruitful results in such fields as infrastructure construction, cultural exchanges, and scientific and technological cooperation.
“Since ancient times, Guangzhou has been an important hub of the Maritime Silk Road. Last year, Guangzhou’s gross domestic product (GDP) reached 3.1 trillion yuan, and its ranking in the “Nature Index – Science Cities” has jumped to the 8th place globally,” said Ms Liu.
“We sincerely welcome friends from the scientific and technological community and the business community of Nepal to visit Guangzhou, gain a better understanding of the city, seek cooperation opportunities, achieve mutual promotion and win-win results, and share the development opportunities of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area and the dividends of China’s super-large market,” said Ms Liu adding, “The Guangzhou Association for Science and Technology is willing to join hands with all parties to build a new pattern of scientific and technological cooperation featuring openness, sharing and win-win results.”
Addressing the event, Mr Chen Julong, AI policy leader and an academic at the South China University of Technology, emphasized China’s growing interest in bilateral R&D partnerships and cross-border startup exchange.
During the event, Attorney at the Beijing Dacheng Law Offices, LLP, Ms Xiaoyi Li, made a presentation on the legal application for Chinese enterprises investing in Nepal.
Mr Ajit Bikram Shah, Director and CEO of Lotus Holdings, and Mr Nischal Singh Bhandari, Member, Startup and Innovation Committee, FNCCI, Head of Program and Partnerships, Aadhyanta Fund Management Limited, participated in the event virtually and highlighted Nepal’s potential as an emerging tech hub. They expressed their interest in joining forces with Chinese tech companies to seize emerging opportunities.
The event brought together thought leaders, investors, government officials, and tech entrepreneurs from Nepal and China to explore opportunities for bilateral collaboration in innovation, technology, and investment. Organized by the Consulate General of Nepal in Guangzhou, the event emphasized Nepal’s potential as a regional tech hub and showcased successful Nepal-China cooperation initiatives.
