According to the latest trade statistics released by the Department of Customs, Nepal imported 425,000 units of smartphones valued at NPR 9,74,36,00,000 during the months of Shrawan and Bhadra. While consumer demand continues to scale upwards, recent trade data highlights a shifting trend toward higher-end devices in the Nepalese market.

Total Import Value: NPR 9.74 billion (Shrawan & Bhadra)
Total Volume: 425,000 units
Volume Comparison: Down by roughly 75,000 units compared to the same period last fiscal year (500,000 units).
Value Comparison: Up by NPR 86.77 million compared to the previous fiscal year’s figure of NPR 8.87 billion.

Shift Toward Premium Devices: Average Import Price Rises
A closer analysis of the customs data reveals a distinct structural change in consumer preferences. Even though the overall volume of imported phones decreased, the total expenditure grew.
This inverse relationship points directly to a rise in the average unit cost of smartphones entering the country:
Previous Fiscal Year: The average import cost per smartphone stood at approximately NPR 17,752.
Current Fiscal Year (2083/84): The average import cost per smartphone jumped significantly to approximately NPR 22,926.
This jump of over NPR 5,000 per device suggests Nepalese consumers are increasingly opting for mid-range to high-end smartphones over budget-tier models, driving up total trade value despite lower unit volumes.

Market observers attribute the steady influx of smartphones to technological upgrades, replacement cycles, and widespread digital adoption across urban and rural Nepal.
