Nepali Students Showcase Linguistic Excellence at Prestigious Global Event
The 20th International Linguistics Olympiad (IOL) is in full swing in the picturesque city of Bansko, where teams from around the world have gathered to test their linguistic prowess. Among the participants, a delegation of talented Nepali students and distinguished observers are making their mark in this year’s event.
Led by Dr. Bal Krishna Bal, an esteemed Associate Professor from Kathmandu University and Computational Linguist, the Nepali team has traveled far to compete in this renowned linguistic competition. Consisting of four bright students and two observers, the team aims to make their country proud on the international stage.
This year’s IOL, held from July 21 to 29, 2023, marks the second time Nepal has participated in the prestigious competition.
The country’s first entry was in 2019 when the event took place in South Korea. The team has shown exceptional promise, and their presence highlights Nepal’s growing interest and commitment to the field of linguistics.
The IOL attracts around 40 teams, comprising over 200 participants from diverse nations worldwide. The event provides an exciting platform for young linguistic enthusiasts to showcase their expertise in solving complex language puzzles and challenges.
Participants engage in various problem-solving tasks that test their analytical and logical thinking, as well as their ability to decipher linguistic patterns.
Back in Nepal, the National Linguistics Olympiad runs annually under the banner of the Himalayan Computational Linguistics Olympiad, with vital support from the Language Technology Kendra, Nepal.
The event, which has been running since 2017, has garnered support from governmental, non-governmental, and private organizations, allowing young linguists to cultivate their skills and passion for language.
The Nepali team’s journey to the IOL has been filled with dedication, hard work, and the unwavering support of its mentors and sponsors. Their participation in this global event showcases the potential and talent that Nepal’s linguistic community possesses.
As the competition intensifies and participants immerse themselves in linguistic challenges, the Nepali team remains determined to leave a lasting impression on the world stage.
