17th July 2025, Kathmandu
In response to investor demand, Nepal Stock Exchange (Nepse) has implemented a new feature allowing investors to view odd lot buy and sell orders on its official website’s market depth section starting from Shrawan 1 (mid-July). This step aims to improve market transparency and ease trading for small investors.

Addressing Investor Concerns On Odd Lot Trading
Investors previously faced challenges trading odd lot securities due to the absence of visible orders on the platform. Odd lot transactions involve trading shares in quantities smaller than the board lot size defined by the Securities Trading Regulations, 2075.
According to these regulations, if a security’s face value is NPR 10, a board lot consists of 100 shares; for NPR 100 face value, 10 shares form a board lot; and for NPR 1,000, a single share counts as a board lot. Any trade below these quantities qualifies as an odd lot.
Nepse’s new feature addresses the longstanding investor concern by allowing users to see these odd lot orders transparently. As a result, investors can make more informed decisions and participate actively in odd lot trading.
Key Regulatory Highlights On Odd Lot Trading
The regulations clarify that:
Odd lot transactions do not affect price limits or market indices such as the Nepse index.
Board lot shares cannot be split to create odd lots artificially.
This ensures the integrity of market pricing and prevents manipulation.
Benefits for Retail Investors And Market Transparency
With this upgrade, small and retail investors gain better access to odd lot securities. The availability of detailed odd lot order information helps in reducing the liquidity gap in the secondary market for smaller share quantities.
Moreover, this initiative strengthens market transparency by allowing investors to monitor all orders, fostering an environment based on real-time data and trust.
Conclusion
Nepse’s move to display odd lot orders on its market depth page is a significant milestone. It promotes inclusive participation in Nepal’s capital market. Investors, especially those trading in smaller volumes, will benefit greatly from this enhanced visibility. Overall, this will contribute to a healthier, more efficient, and transparent securities trading environment in Nepal.
