Nepal Insurance Authority Issues 8-Point Directive to Ease Claim Settlement for Rasuwa Flood Victims Without Requiring Death Certificates
3rd November 2026, Kathmandu
The Nepal Insurance Authority has simplified the insurance claim settlement process to provide immediate relief to life insurance policyholders and their beneficiaries affected by the severe flooding on Bhadra 10.
NIA Issues 8-Point Directive
The Authority issued an eight-point directive instructing life insurance and micro-life insurance companies to relax documentation requirements for death claims, policy surrenders, policy loan issuances, and maturity benefit payments.
Key Claim Settlement Facilitation Measures for Flood Victims
The Authority established simplified procedures targeting policyholders and beneficiaries who lost documents or faced procedural hurdles due to floods across the Lhende Khola, Bhotekoshi, Trishuli, and Narayani river systems.
- Minimum Required Details: Submitting a claim application requires stating the policyholder’s name, date and cause of death, policy number, and the claimant’s relationship.
- Flexible Identification Requirements: Claimants can verify their identity using any single official document, including a Citizenship Certificate, National ID Card, Driver’s License, Passport, or Land Ownership Certificate.
- Recommendation for Missing Persons and Casualties: Formal death certificates are not mandatory; certified verification details or recommendation letters issued by authorized local bodies or officials serve as valid proof. Judicial declarations of death may also be accepted where applicable.
- Beneficiary Undertaking for Missing Persons: Beneficiaries of policyholders missing due to the floods can receive claim payouts by submitting a self-declaration undertaking to abide by legal provisions should the policyholder be found alive in the future.
Relief Provisions for Policies and Premium Installments
Special accommodations have been introduced for policyholders facing document loss or financial constraints following the natural disaster.
- Free Duplicate Policy Issuance: If original policy documents are lost or destroyed, claims will proceed based on internal insurer records, and duplicate policy documents must be provided free of charge upon request.
- 6-Month Interest-Free Grace Period: Policyholders unable to pay insurance premiums or loan installments due to flood impacts will receive a grace period of up to six months without any interest charges.
- Policy Docket Record Updates: Policyholders and insurance agents are encouraged to assist insurance companies in updating records for damaged policy dockets.
