NTA Blocked Illegal Betting Apps

In a significant move to control online gambling and illicit financial activities, the Nepal Telecommunications Authority (NTA) has blocked more than 223,568 illegal betting apps and websites across the country.

This decisive action aligns with the Nepal government’s governance reform directives aimed at curbing online scams and illegal betting activities.

Government’s 24-Hour Directive Against Online Gambling

As part of the government’s 100-point Governance Reform Agenda, Point 42 explicitly mandated the Ministry of Communication and Information Technology to shut down all online betting apps and associated websites within 24 hours.

Following this decree, the NTA initiated a continuous drive alongside domestic Internet Service Providers (ISPs) to restrict access to these unauthorized platforms.

FIFA World Cup & Task Force Intervention

Concerns grew about a potential spike in online betting during high-profile sporting events such as the FIFA World Cup. Following directives from the Prime Minister’s Office, NTA formed a dedicated Task Force to handle real-time URL blocking.

According to Om Prakash Mahato, NTA Assistant Director and Engineer, representatives from various ISPs worked directly at the NTA office during the World Cup to systematically monitor, track, and block unauthorized URLs.

Technical Strategy: How NTA Blocks Mirror Websites

One of the primary challenges in digital hunting is that when one betting URL is blocked, operators quickly launch mirror sites under new domain names. To combat this, NTA employs advanced measures:

Threat Intelligence Tools: Utilizing threat intelligence tech to hunt down newly emerging fraudulent and betting domains automatically.

ISP Collaboration: Partnering with local internet vendors to execute immediate domain-level and IP-level bans.

Crowdsourced Reporting: Maintaining an active system for public reporting to discover unlisted scam sites.
