Om Prakash Aryal: Lawyer and Social Activist Turned Home Minister
Aryal is a prominent lawyer best known for his involvement in public interest litigation and his role in various social movements. He has been a strong advocate for constitutional supremacy, rule of law, and citizens’ rights. His previous role as legal advisor to Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah highlighted his deep engagement in governance and reform initiatives.
His appointment as Home Minister places him at the helm of Nepal’s internal security at a time of political turbulence, youth-led protests, and public demand for accountability. With the added responsibility of the Law Ministry, Aryal is expected to prioritize:
Strengthening democratic governance and constitutional safeguards.
Reforming policing and security institutions to ensure accountability.
Advancing justice sector reforms and protecting human rights.
Coordinating with civil society for conflict resolution and peacebuilding.
A Reform-Oriented Cabinet
Alongside Aryal, former Finance Secretary Rameshore Khanal has been appointed as Finance Minister, while celebrated power sector reformer Kulman Ghising will lead the Ministry of Energy and oversee Physical Infrastructure, Transport, and Urban Development.
Public Expectations from Om Prakash Aryal
Observers say Aryal’s inclusion in the cabinet reflects Prime Minister Sushila Karki’s intent to bring reform-driven leaders into government.
His legal background and activism suggest that his tenure as Home Minister could focus heavily on protecting civil liberties and ensuring that the state operates within constitutional boundaries.
As Nepal navigates political transition after widespread protests, Om Prakash Aryal’s appointment as Home Minister is being closely watched as a test of the government’s commitment to justice, rule of law, and democratic accountability.
