The transition in leadership comes at a pivotal time for Nepal’s logistics sector, as entrepreneurs face ongoing challenges related to international border competition, rising operational costs, and the need for digital modernization in freight management.
Election Results and Voting Details
The election process was characterized by a competitive but structured democratic exercise. According to the official results, Rajendra Bikram Baniya received 112 votes, while Om Krishna Karki garnered 77 votes. This margin reflects a clear majority in favor of Baniya’s vision for the federation’s future.
While the presidential race was contested, other key leadership roles saw a high degree of consensus. The position of Senior Vice President was filled unopposed, with Bishnu Prasad Neupane being elected unanimously by the delegation.
Vice Presidents and Executive Positions
The election for the broader executive team saw several notable victories and unopposed appointments. In the race for Vice President, Kisan Gurung and Vidyapati Upadhyay Ghimire emerged victorious, securing 164 votes and 108 votes respectively.
The role of General Secretary, often considered the administrative backbone of the federation, was filled by Badri Prasad Chaulagain, who was elected unopposed. This appointment underscores a broad consensus among federation members regarding the administrative leadership required for the next three years.
Shared Secretary Role Agreement
One of the most unusual and cooperative outcomes of the convention occurred during the election for Secretary. Two candidates, Umesh Chandra Majgaiya and Ganga Bahadur Khadka, both received an equal number of 95 votes. To maintain unity and avoid a re-vote that might delay the convention’s conclusion, both candidates reached a mutual agreement to split the term. Under this arrangement, each will serve as Secretary for half of the three-year tenure.
Treasurer and Financial Leadership
The financial oversight of the federation was also decided during the voting process. In the Treasurer election, Rumakhar Gautam won decisively with 132 votes, defeating Tikaram Gautam, who received 60 votes. Additionally, Suman Sapkota was elected as Co-Treasurer after securing 107 votes. These leaders will be responsible for managing the federation’s resources and advocating for fiscal policies that benefit truck owners and operators.
Provincial Coordinators and Committee Formation
To ensure geographic representation across Nepal’s federal structure, the convention elected coordinators from all seven provinces. All provincial coordinators were elected unopposed, reflecting a unified approach to regional leadership:
Koshi Province: Binod Khadka
Madhesh Province: Ram Bahadur Duwadi
Bagmati Province: Surya Bahadur Shrestha
Gandaki Province: Kedarnath Ghimire
Lumbini Province: Yam Prasad Pandey
Karnali Province: Chetan Thani
Sudurpaschim Province: Mohan Singh Saut
With the inclusion of these coordinators, the federation has successfully formed a new 16-member central executive committee. This diverse body is tasked with addressing the specific logistical and regulatory issues unique to each province, from the plains of Madhesh to the mountainous terrains of Karnali.
Participation and Sector Significance
The national convention witnessed the participation of nearly 500 truck transport entrepreneurs from across the country. This strong turnout highlights the federation’s standing as the primary umbrella organization representing the interests of Nepal’s trucking and logistics sector. The trucking industry remains a lifeline for the landlocked nation, facilitating the movement of over 90 percent of goods imported through various border points.
The newly elected leadership is expected to focus on several critical priorities:
Policy Advocacy: Engaging with the Department of Transport Management to adjust freight rates in response to fuel price fluctuations.
Regulatory Reforms: Addressing the concerns regarding the “Save Public Transport Movement” and the enforcement of the Motor Vehicles and Transport Management Act.
Border Issues: Managing the competitive imbalance caused by the entry of foreign cargo vehicles.
Modernization: Implementing digital load regulation software to improve transparency in the logistics chain.
Conclusion
The election of Rajendra Bikram Baniya as President marks the start of a new chapter for the Nepal Truck Transport Entrepreneurs Federation. With a balanced executive committee and strong provincial representation, the federation is well-positioned to navigate the complex economic landscape of 2026. As the new leadership begins its three-year tenure, the primary focus will remain on fostering collaboration between the government and private transporters to ensure a safe, organized, and lawful transport system.
