The Rastriya Banijya Bank Employees’ Union Nepal recently celebrated its 68th anniversary with a series of impactful events held nationwide, reaffirming its unwavering commitment to workers’ rights and social responsibility. The central ceremony, led by Union President Laxmi Prasad Pandey, brought together key figures from Nepal’s banking and labor sectors, highlighting a significant milestone in the Union’s long history of advocating for its members.

The main anniversary celebration featured Punya Prasad Dhakal, President of the Professional Federation of Nepal, as the chief guest. Dhakal’s address underscored the crucial link between ensuring employment security and providing adequate service facilities for employees and the resulting enhancement of institutional productivity. His solidarity with the ongoing employee movement within Rastriya Banijya Bank (RBB) was a strong message, with an assurance that the federation would actively work towards a resolution.
Union President Laxmi Prasad Pandey voiced significant concern over the bank management’s repeated failure to implement past agreements. He issued a stern warning that continued negligence could lead to an escalation of protest activities, reflecting the growing dissatisfaction among the workforce regarding unfulfilled commitments. This sentiment was echoed by various dignitaries, including former Union President Shiv Kumar Adhikari and Dharma Raj Mainali, Chairman of the National Committee of the Bank, Insurance, and Financial Sector Employees’ Union of Nepal.
The event also welcomed remarks from the newly appointed Chairman of the Bank’s Board of Directors, Dev Kumar Dhakal, and Acting CEO Debesh Prasad Lohani, alongside Ram Hari Ghimire, President of Nepal Rastra Bank Employees’ Union, and representatives from other unions like Ishwar Bahadur Singh and Dipendra Karki. Their presence underscored the collaborative spirit within the Nepali labor movement and the collective desire for fair labor practices.
Recognizing Contributions and Fostering Employee Engagement
A cherished tradition, the anniversary celebration included the recognition and honoring of employees who have made significant contributions to the bank’s services. This year’s celebration also fostered employee participation and creativity through various competitions.
In the essay competition, focusing on the “Impact of the Gratuity System” and “Contribution-Based Gratuity: Its Effects on Employees and Possible Solutions,” Janaki Kumari Neupane emerged as a double winner, securing first place in both categories. Rama Parajuli and Rakesh Kumar Rai were recognized for their excellent contributions, securing second and third places respectively in the latter essay contest.
The much-enjoyed chair race event saw Renuka Neupane clinch the first position, with Elina Gautam and Kopila Dhakal finishing second and third, showcasing the camaraderie and lively spirit among the bank’s employees.
Provincial Impact and Commitment to Social Responsibility
A significant highlight of this year’s anniversary was the recognition of the Karnali Province Committee, which was awarded the prestigious “Running Shield” for its outstanding work and leadership in organizing impactful programs in its region. This award acknowledges the dedication and effectiveness of the Union’s provincial bodies.
Beyond the central events, the Union’s provincial committees across Koshi, Madhesh, Bagmati, Gandaki, Lumbini, Karnali, and Sudurpaschim actively hosted a diverse range of social and interactive activities. These initiatives demonstrated the Union’s profound dedication to social responsibility. Programs included:
- Blood donation campaigns, contributing to vital healthcare needs.
- Food distribution programs, supporting vulnerable communities.
- Services at old-age homes and orphanages, providing care and assistance to those in need.
- Distribution of educational materials to underprivileged students, investing in the future generation.
These extensive activities illustrate the Rastriya Banijya Bank Employees’ Union Nepal’s commitment not only to its members but also to the wider Nepali society.
A Vision for the Future: Advocacy and Institutional Growth
The 68th-anniversary event, skillfully hosted by Union General Secretary Rabindra Prasad Chaulagai, with a welcoming speech from Senior Vice President Badri Prasad Timilsina, served as a powerful reminder of the Union’s rich history of advocacy for employee rights.
