Samsung Galaxy A51 is World’s Top Android Smartphone Model in Q1 2020: Strategy Analytics

Reports say that Samsung Galaxy A51 is the world’s best-selling Android smartphone in the first quarter of 2020.

The smartphone was launched in December 2019 while in Nepal, it came out alongside Galaxy A71 only on March 6, 2020. The successor to the Galaxy A50 and A50s was released in Nepal with the price tag of Rs. 38,399.

With 6 million units shipped globally, Samsung Galaxy A51 has managed to capture a market share of 2%. Strategy Analytics also claims that Xiaomi Redmi 8 is the second most popular Android smartphone in the world. Likewise, another Xiaomi smartphone to enter the race is Redmi Note 8, with a 1.6 percent share.

Linda Sui, Director at Strategy Analytics, said, “Global smartphone shipments reached a total of 275 million units in Q1 2020. The Android segment accounted for a dominant 86 percent share of all smartphones shipped worldwide in the quarter. The vast majority of smartphones sold globally today are Android models.”

As you can see in the bar diagram, Samsung dominated the top 6 positions worldwide in the first quarter of 2020. However, the only super-premium model among the top 6 is Samsung Galaxy S20+, which held the third position with a 1.7% share.

Associate Director at Strategy Analytics, Juha Winter added, “As mobile operators have reduced subsidies in recent years, and many countries are now tumbling into post-virus recession, smartphone consumers globally are becoming increasingly price-sensitive, and they are seeking out new Android models that deliver the biggest bang for their buck.”

The Galaxy A51 belongs to the mid-range A series that includes some features from the Samsung flagship. This report proves that buyers prefer more affordable models rather than flagship smartphones.

The specs do justice to a mid-range smartphone like the A51, but is it worthy of being on the top spot? Well, the stats certainly incline towards the popularity of affordable smartphones.

In the post-coronavirus era, users will likely be looking for Android smartphones that give value for money. The reports also suggest that “Android is entering a post-premium era.”
