Saving Nepal’s Freshwater Dolphins: Cimex BYD Charity Foundation’s Dolphin Protection Initiative
4th April 2025, Kathmandu
Cimex BYD Charity Foundation, an initiative by Cimex Inc., the official distributor of BYD vehicles in Nepal, has introduced ‘Project Dolphin,’ a dedicated effort to protect the endangered Gangetic River dolphins in Nepal.
Saving Nepal’s Freshwater Dolphins
The project was launched on April 3, 2025, at the Patan Museum, coinciding with World Aquatic Animal Day. This new program focuses on preserving Nepal’s freshwater ecosystems while safeguarding the critically endangered dolphin species.
Gangetic Dolphins: An Endangered Species
Gangetic river dolphins, considered critically endangered, have fewer than 3,500 individuals remaining worldwide. In Nepal, only 52 dolphins survive, with 43 in the Karnali River and 9 in the Koshi River, according to a 2016 survey. The foundation’s initiative aims to bring attention to this alarming issue and help protect the species. By aligning its electric vehicle efforts, particularly the popular BYD Dolphin EV, with conservation goals, Cimex BYD Charity Foundation emphasizes the link between sustainable mobility and environmental protection.
Event Highlights: Panel Discussion and Recognition
The event included a panel discussion centered on community, collaboration, and conservation. Abhay Raj Joshi, a prominent journalist, moderated the discussion. Notable panelists included Ambika Prasad Khatiwada, Senior Conservation Officer at the National Nature Conservation Fund; Professor Chhatraman Sharma, an aquatic ecosystem expert from Tribhuvan University; Srishti Singh Bhandari, Executive Director of Jane Goodall Institute Nepal; and Ashish Kapali, a Program Associate for WWF Nepal.
A special moment of the event was the recognition of Bhojraj Shrestha, also known as ‘Guleli Baje,’ for his extensive contributions to wildlife conservation. At 91 years old, Shrestha led Nepal’s first dolphin conservation efforts, including collecting over 8,000 slingshots from children to prevent harm to dolphins and birds. His work continues as he documents dolphin conservation initiatives and community efforts through a book on the Mohana River dolphins.
Educational Outreach: Dolphin Awareness for Children
As part of SBCF’s efforts to raise awareness, the foundation also launched a children’s book titled ‘Dolphin’s Dream.’ Written by Anuradha and illustrated by Prakash Ranjit, the book educates young readers on the importance of dolphin protection. During the event, BYD brand ambassador Haribansh Acharya and LID Nepal President Anil Keshari Shah unveiled the book cover, symbolizing the foundation’s commitment to educating future generations.
Project’s Broader Commitment to Conservation
Anil Shrestha, Chairman of Cimex Inc., expressed that ‘Project Dolphin’ goes beyond just saving dolphins. It is a holistic initiative to protect rivers, forests, animals, and the communities that rely on these ecosystems. He emphasized that Cimex BYD Charity Foundation and BYD are reaffirming their commitment to sustainability and environmental preservation.
Through this project, the foundation integrates BYD’s electric vehicle innovations with its dedication to conservation, reinforcing the idea that technology and environmental protection can complement each other. Shrestha stated, “This initiative will drive sustainable development and wildlife protection in Nepal while strengthening our ecological efforts.”
Future Steps: Ongoing Commitment to Sustainability
Cimex BYD Charity Foundation remains committed to supporting meaningful conservation efforts. By launching Project Dolphin, the foundation not only highlights the importance of saving Nepal’s endangered species but also fosters collaboration and awareness. The foundation will continue its mission, advocating for the protection of Nepal’s unique biodiversity and ecosystems for future generations.
