Software Freedom Day (SFD) is an annual global celebration dedicated to promoting the benefits of free and open-source software (FOSS). Celebrated on the third Saturday of September, this event highlights the importance of software freedom in enhancing accessibility, transparency, and collaboration within the tech community.

In Nepal, the Nepal Open Source Klub (NOSK) has been at the forefront of this celebration since 2008, fostering a culture of openness and innovation.

The Significance of Software Freedom

In a world increasingly reliant on technology, the desire for freedom in software and hardware is more relevant than ever. Many individuals in developing countries, including Nepal, face challenges in accessing paid software due to high costs. This financial barrier not only limits their ability to utilize essential tools but also hampers transparency in how software operates and manages user data.

FOSS provides a solution by allowing users to inspect, modify, and redistribute software at no cost. The phrase “Free as in Freedom, not as in Free Beer” encapsulates the essence of this movement, emphasizing the value of user autonomy over mere cost savings.

NOSK’s Contributions to the Open Source Community

This year, NOSK organized a grand celebration at the Nepal College of Information Technology (NCIT) to mark Software Freedom Day 2024. The event featured a diverse array of activities designed to engage participants and showcase the vibrant open-source community in Nepal.

Key Highlights of NOSK SFD 2024

  1. Open Source Project Exhibition: A first for Nepal, this exhibition showcased over eight local open-source projects, allowing developers to present their work to the community. Awards were given for categories such as People’s Choice and Best Contributor, highlighting the innovative spirit of Nepalese developers.
  2. Coding and Cybersecurity Challenges: The NOSKODE 5.0 programming challenge attracted around 25 participants, while the Capture the Flag (CTF) cybersecurity challenge saw approximately 30 competitors. These competitions encouraged skill development and provided a platform for aspiring developers and cybersecurity enthusiasts to showcase their talents.
  3. Expert Talks and Presentations: The event featured insightful talks from industry professionals, including Er. Hempal Shrestha, who discussed the impact of open-source software in Nepal, and Er. Kumar Pudashine, who addressed cybersecurity awareness and career insights. These discussions emphasized the importance of skill development in a rapidly evolving tech landscape.
  4. Linux Distro Demonstrations: Attendees had the opportunity to explore various Linux distributions, including Ubuntu, Debian, and Fedora. This hands-on experience allowed participants to familiarize themselves with different operating systems and understand their features.
  5. Community Engagement: The event fostered collaboration among various tech communities, including alumni from NOSK and students from Kathmandu University Open Source Club (KUOSC) and Birendra Open Source Club (BOSC). This collaborative atmosphere reinforced the importance of community in advancing the open-source movement.

Supporting Organizations and Partnerships

The success of NOSK SFD 2024 was made possible through partnerships with multiple organizations, including NCIT, Broadway Infosys, Leapfrog Technology Nepal, and The Document Foundation. Support from these entities underscored the commitment to promoting open-source technologies and enhancing the tech ecosystem in Nepal.

Conclusion

Software Freedom Day serves as a reminder of the ongoing struggle for freedom in technology. Through initiatives like NOSK’s celebration, Nepal is taking significant steps toward embracing open-source principles and empowering its tech community. By fostering a culture of collaboration, transparency, and innovation, NOSK is helping to ensure that the benefits of technology are accessible to all, paving the way for a brighter future in Nepal’s digital landscape.
