Sunway College Kathmandu, in collaboration with the Nepal Chamber of Commerce, recently hosted a pivotal event titled “AI and Data Science: Empowering Nepali Businesses in the Digital Age.” Moderated by Simoli Desai, Head of Operations at Sunway College Kathmandu, the event brought together top experts to discuss the role of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Data Science in transforming Nepal’s business landscape.

Key Panel Discussion Points:

AI Practices in Organizations: Panelists shared how their respective organizations are leveraging AI and Data Science to enhance operations, products, and services. Specific examples from Nepal demonstrated how AI has been crucial in improving business processes and increasing efficiency.

Challenges and Opportunities: Despite the vast potential, the panel identified significant challenges, such as the high cost of AI implementation and the lack of AI literacy among key decision-makers. The discussion also emphasized how addressing these challenges could unlock substantial opportunities for Nepali businesses.

Ethical Considerations: The panel addressed the ethical concerns surrounding AI, emphasizing the need for responsible AI development. Privacy, data security, and the ethical implications of AI deployment were highlighted as critical areas businesses need to consider.

Talent Development: A significant gap in AI and Data Science talent in Nepal was identified as a major issue. The panelists discussed how collaboration between educational institutions, businesses, and the government can help develop the necessary workforce to meet the growing demand for AI expertise.

Government Policies and Regulations: The panelists also discussed the role of government in fostering AI growth, stressing the need for supportive policies and regulations to create an environment conducive to AI innovation and adoption in Nepal.

This was highlighted by Kamlesh Kumar Agrawal, President of the Nepal Chamber of Commerce, during Sunway College Kathmandu’s recent event, “AI and Data Science: Empowering Nepali Business in the Digital Age.”

Sunway College’s AI and Data Science Program

Sunway College Kathmandu, established in 2010, offers a 4-year specialized undergraduate degree in Artificial Intelligence and Data Science, in partnership with Birmingham City University, UK. The program includes a 1-year professional placement, bridging the gap between academia and industry. Sunway aims to shape the next generation of AI and Data Science leaders in Nepal, preparing students to drive innovation across various sectors.

Panel Discussion on AI in Nepal

Dr. Hemanta Shrestha, Cofounder of Wise Yak: Dr. Shrestha shared insights on AI-driven solutions and how local industries can harness AI for growth.

Dr. Roshan Koju, Director of the Social Security Fund: Dr. Koju discussed how Data Science can optimize large-scale government operations for better efficiency and transparency.

Ms. Simoli Desai, Head of Operations (Moderator): As the moderator, Desai facilitated dynamic discussions, ensuring the panel explored how AI and Data Science can be practically integrated into business.

Dr. Manoj Shakya, Assistant Professor at Kathmandu University: Dr. Shakya emphasized the importance of educational institutions collaborating with industry to foster innovation in AI and Data Science.

Mr. Binay Khadka, CEO of Khalti: Khadka provided practical examples of how AI and Data Science have contributed to scaling Khalti’s digital payment platform, addressing the growing demands of Nepali businesses and consumers.

The event was also attended by Bigyan Shrestha, Chair of the IT Committee; cybersecurity expert Chiranjibi Adhikari, General Secretary of the CAN Federation; Principal of Softwarica College, Pramod Poudel; Academic Chief Khushal Regmi from Sunway College Kathmandu, along with representatives from various tech and business sectors.
